Hey all,

Following on from my thread about the jerky issues I am having when cold, link for anyone interested - 2012 CLS63 Shooting Brake - Gearbox & Suspension Issues | AMG Lounge

I thought I would start a thread on my CLS63 Shooting Brake as a whole, from when I picked it up, any drives I have done and the future plans I have for it.

This is my first foray into the AMG world, having owned an RS6 and, very briefly, an M6. I am a big fan of car that you don’t see very often as well, it’s nice to have something that you can drive and the likelihood of seeing another is very low.

So having said that I found a nice Diamond White one, with full service history and a stack of paperwork from previous owners, that arrived on the drive in October.

The plan was to just enjoy the car and do some odd cosmetic work on it to bring it to my taste in the short term. My long term plans were to do some more substantial mods to the car including wheels, spacers, lowering it and possible exhaust upgrade. I was thinking remap as well but that would probably be done same time as any exhaust work.

Pretty much want to keep this car long term but the idea would be any modifications I do could be reversible if I do reach a point I need to sell it, hence any remap work being the last on the list.

So having it for a couple months, the car according to my 6 year old daughter is now called “The Speedy Car”, no idea where she got that from. The first thing that I didn’t really like about the car was the chrome trim, my personal preference but it always looked odd. The big Mercedes badge on the front grill also stood out to much for my liking.

So I got it booked in, in January, to have the chrome trim on the sides and back wrapped in piano black, and the front grill badge also wrapped in black. I also got the handles wrapped too.

I think it looks a lot meaner, especially with the black grill. The only thing I am not 100% on is the is the handles, I originally thought I liked it but over time I have slowly been put off them as they kind of stick out a bit, so I’m thinking I may remove them.

Despite the cold jerky issues I was experiencing I took the car to Northumberland for a week of castles, seaside and beer. The first real long road trip I did in the car.

Now I know we don’t buy these car for mpg figures but having a look at the trip details when home I was quite surprised at the economy I got from her. There was also an horrendous amount flys around so the car was covered when I got home.

The car rewarded me the middle of May with the tyre pressure sensor going off. A quick set of new rubber for the front I hoped would sort this issues, boy was I wrong.

The garage said one alloy was cracked and the rest of the wheels were quite badly buckled. This meant I had a decision to make, get all my wheel fixed and refurbed and bring forward my purchase of aftermarket wheels.

The garage managed to fit the tyres but the next day the alloy with the crack was down again, so the crack was worse than feared. This was on the day I was meant to be packing the car up to go camping down near Cheddar Gorge, so unfortunately I had to leave the car at home and take my dad’s Monderoo.

Get back from camping, got the alloy fixed and fitted but I was still in 2 minds about what to do, so I did what all good people do and hit up google to see what’s available for the car.

This got me to emailing the people at Vossen, who in turn put me in contact with Prestige Wheel Centre. A couple back and forth emails and I put in an order for a set Vossen HF-3’s in Satin Bronze.

It’s a custom colour and with the custom order they can engineer it so it sits flush with the arches but can take into account any lowering I was planning on doing.

Couple pics from the Vossen site of the wheels in situ on certain cars.

Bit more expensive that I was really looking at but I think they will look awesome once on. Lead time is 5/6 weeks so I am now sitting patiently waiting for those to arrive and get them on the car.

Thats it for now. Updates to come when the new wheels arrive.

Nice write up of your plans so far. Liking those Vossens too, a nice upgrade despite the price:eek:

You did pretty well on the MPG but you can do better:D My remapped E63Biturbo did 29.4mpg on a long run of 100+miles. Not hanging around either.
There should be a photo on here somewhere I was so pleased with the economy.

Be careful remapping the car. You really reduce the number of buyers when it comes to resale. I was lucky someone wanted a remapped car but I've known some cars stay on sale for months on end . If you do go down that route I can really recommend Acid at MSL Performance Birmingham.
Went from 572bhp to 666bhp and up to 775ftlbs. The car absolutely flew.

That is good!

I've seen MSL mentioned before a few times with good reviews.

That is also part of my thinking and why remapping will be left to last if I think about going that route. I would probably do that and any exhaust work at the same time as well.

Great looking car, and I nearly bought one last year, the engine number ended in 9097. It's not the same one, is it?

Had a look not the same unfortunately.

So there is another Diamond White Shooting Brake out in the wild somewhere.

I was that close to buying it when I took it for a test drive that I didn't take any pics, and it was a wet and miserable day. There was something about the gearbox that I wasn't sure about, despite its full and excellent service history. I was looking to replace a daily hack, so decided against it, but what a beast!
