Just had a call from our insurance company about an incident involving our car in Norfolk [no other info provided].

Trouble is family and car were holed up in another country at the time.

What do you think - cloning? someone having a punt? something more sinister?

I don't know what I should do. Options currently range from Nothing to The Police. I feel sure the superior wisdom of the mbclub forum members will have some opinion

Police.

get in first so they know its not yours!!!! You are now aware of the incident anwya so nothing to lose, and the Police dont mind upholding the law for the innocent.

I would be inclined to look at it another way....

The Norfolk incident itself is of no concern to you. But that there *may* be another car running around on the same plates as yours, is.

Firstly, how satisfied are you that yours is the correct car and not the clone (I would suggest you do not answer that question on this website).

Innocently, it could well be that someone has mis-recorded or transposed a digit or two in the registration (probably the most likely answer in my experience).

Either way, I would speak to your local cops. And I would do it by asking to speak to someone in person, perhaps at the local Traffic Cops Office (aka Dunkin Donuts  ) - its not something your want to be dealt with by the ever-so-helpful person in the callcentre.

PS
Physical ID marks tend to be altered in line with the knowledge held at Dealer network level, so that your local dealer hasn't noticed anything wrong, does not mean the car is the correct one.

On a side note, did they just say "involving your car in ..." or did they go into some detail? Did they ask you for any personal details? My warped mind is thinking of someone sititng outside your house, sees your licence plate and calls you up (maybe even knowing your insurance company name and pretending to be them just to get some more details).

Insurance company advised wife's company as car is on their fleet insurance, so that's legit I think.

Have reported it to Police & DVLA.

Just hope DVLA aren't selling our details though.

Not cynical, honest guv!

Hopefully you have done this IN WRITING and done the same thing with the police?

WHAT if someone who lives in London clones their vehicle number with that of a legitimate similar car also from the London area and the legitimate owner was on the road, not in the specific area but no alibi?

Regards
John

Yes thanks John, it is in writing to both.

It could of course just be a misquoted registration - yeah right!

A quick check of the VIN numbers around the car and supporting documents should suffice here. Don't people do this, I've checked all three of mine..and they did all match..

LOL...:D
Nice to see you're not at all bitter.
