Hard to say.

Well it's countersunk and if it may be 1/4" UNC

Hard to tell from a pic

Also if you get a screw and its galv or stainless you will get a reaction between dis-similar metals so put some copper slip on the threads which should help you get it out in the future. I dont think length of screw will be too important aslong as you have clearance for a longer screw

Is there enough 'meat' on the housing to drill them out and install metric thread inserts ? Bit extreme I know .

Or try these guys.

Should be easy to find them in a good hardware store , even if you have to cut them down.
I agree , but try finding a 'real' hardware store these days. My local one is now a small group of new build flats . Thankfully they still exist but are going the same way as Fishmongers/Butchers and bakeries these days. :( PS , I am not a pensioner longing for the 'old days' :D

Measure the outer diameter of the thread - that is its M 'number.
Measure the length of the threaded portion and divide it by the number of threads - that is its pitch.
Cross refer on chart below.

If not 'exact' then refer to possible imperial sizes and convert the given dimensions in inches to mm and compare with your measurements.

Once you have the thread and diameter, search for countersunk set screw.

would stainless self tappers be easier

or pop round to your neighbours garden when its dark........
