Hi,

I know all this has been discussed before. I've been given a ridiculous quote to have the job done on my Viano, one was £2500!! Okay its a big job but bloody hell!!
I am a construction plant engineer and yes I could probably do it myself but to be honest after working away all week on excavators I'm not really up for it.
Anyone know any sensible independent in Exeter or Taunton area.
Help please!

I assume from that quote it's an engine-out job? The OM642 is a pretty tight fit in the W639, which makes some jobs impossible with it in situ (manifold/turbo replacement, for one).

Yes I guess so. I just haven't got the time or facilities to do it, let alone that kind of money.
If there's no one in my local area I'm happy to take it further a field for a better price.

I've had a quote for this from PCS Horndean on the E class. I haven't got it to hand, but it was no more than £800 I think. I'm sure this is easier in a car than van, but I've seen photos of Merc vans outside their workshop on Google images. Might be worth getting a quote and seeing if you can arrange a loan car through them?

Thank you appreciate your reply.

There is MBS on marsh barton exeter

I had my C class done at Avantgarde, had to also replace 1 X inlet
Ended up costing me around £2200 after one of the gaskets was blowing the day after...
There is also D&B Automotive in BS40..

I've just had oil cooler replaced at Mercedes Benz Specialist in UK | Milton Auto Services in Weston-super-Mare, who were recommended to me by an E-class driving cabbie. Spot on really.

Just over £1200 inc vat. This included the Inlet Port Shut Off Motor which added to cost.

Avantgarde know their stuff but quoted more to do the work. D&B have been good in the past but have become a bit too popular, dropped the ball for me once, and seemed reluctant to take it on anyway. Main dealers and a lot of specialists are reluctant to take these on as the job comes with risks (cracked inlet manifolds, jammed or broken glowplugs - needing drillout, helicoil) and it ties up a ramp that would be making more profit on easier work. I've been told by two current MB techs that they price the jobs high as poss with this in mind. None of them enjoy the work...

Oh, and they're a 10 min walk from Worle station so you can get in and out fairly easily.

Didn't even know they existed and just down the road for me, good news, thanks

Yeah, slick operation as well. Usual thing - ex-main dealer bods, all MB bits - but calm as you like and delivered without fuss. Did actual diagnosis on another leak (power steering high-pressure line) instead of hit-and-hope parts replacement so double-thumbs-up in my book.
