Any advice on drilling the standard Merc airbox to make it sound beefier? (Apart from "Don't do it")

Don't do it!!

No, seriously, don't do it. You have a type of induction kit fitted as standard, there is a pipe from just behind the grill that 'rams' the air into the airbox and more importantly sucks in cold air rather than hot air from under the bonnet.
 
I agree with Jimmy, plus I doubt it would do wonders for your air filter either.

I did a thread ages ago but cant' find it.....


There are two types of intake (drivers side next to the fans) - one is more obviously free flowing than the other.... I'lll see if I can find pics.
 
it will also reduce the life of your MAS
 
Agree with spinal. I wouldnt do it mate. If anything get an induction kit, K & N or something similar.
