Couple years ago I was in Gstaad for a conference.

One round of drinks (nothing special) in hotel bar for four people: £105 at prevailing exchange rates.

One of our party was Swiss and expressed outrage to the waiter, who said, with no sense of apology, what roughly translates as follows:

"Sir, as you know in Switzerland we rip off tourists. But in Gstaad we rip off everybody "

That's utterly, utterly scandalous! I thought Paris was expensive... That is, however, a new level of violation!


I love the Wetherspoon promotion on at the moment though- Any bottle of wine on the menu for £7.60ish. Chateauneuf du Pape anyone?

I almost fell on the floor when the barman sheepishly told me how much it was.

Crickey, is that place still going. I used to stay there a lot some years ago, it was the car stereo crime capital of the World. I used to look for something better or a soft top to park next to..

You want to try a 5 star hotel In Norway.
I was sent out by my company and I had to entertain the client for two nights.
My final bill was over £1200 of which over £700 of that was the bar tab.
For two nights.

Yep....had a close reli who often went on sea trials in those parts....they always docked for a bit and took with them a couple of crates of Scotch...they were very welcome visitors!!
