i have just purchased a 2012 E class with the gear selector on the steering column. I was just wondering (may be a stupid question) if I'm in drive what would happen if this gets nocked while I'm driving.

I don’t think the car’s electronics will allow you to put the car in reverse while driving. In addition, you have to have the foot on the brake in order to select reverse. If you knock the direct select lever while driving, I believe the gearbox will go into neutral.

I don’t know for certain, but I’m sure others will be able to confirm or otherwise.

It's easy to knock it into neutral on my C43. I've done that many times and then look really stupid not remembering how to put in gear again...

You would have to categorically know the electronics will not allow reverse to be selected while travelling forwards before being anything less than paranoid of knocking the lever to the R position.
The gearbox on my car/truck is under electronic control but will shift to reverse at any forward speed.
