Driven: New bmw m5

I don't know.

I was talking to my optician about this today and other cars.

He loves the M5 but for me, apart from the aris, the rest of it looks bland.

Sure, performance and handling yadder yadder, but it looks too plain to me.

I prefer the E39 and Bangle E60 versions.

The 5 series Estates look very attractive. I find them far more pleasing on the eye than the previous angular versions.

I like it, new 5 Series looks good especially in the Sport guise. This M5 will fly. I drove the current M3 a few weeks back and gave it a good seeing to. The car was very quick and the DCT Gearbox was lightning, loved it. Will consider the M3 when I'm due to change next.

Can't wait to see what the Touring version will look like.

Like the current 5-Series Touring just with the front/rear bumpers, side skirts, front wings + similar rear wings, exhaust & wheels from the M5 saloon? :dk:

I'd still rather have the Alpina B5 but then I'm a little biased towards Alpinas because of the one my mum drives, got to wait until I'm older before I can get a decent insurance quote for one - which is bizarre beyond belief.

My experience in insuring Alpinas was similarly bizarre.

I'm sure it is better these days but most insurers don't know what a B10 is and think it is an M5 or 540.

I too would rather have the B5 and in fact, when the E60 M5 and B5 came out, the B5 was faster although I guess because of the torquey blown V8 vs. V10.

I wouldn't mind the B5 or D5 Touring, think in reality I'd be swayed for the D5 - so long as it could be spec'd as a 4wd, it's a bit odd that Sytner don't or didn't allow ordering the 4wd models but maybe they've changed? What's more is the Nottingham (main Alpina import) dealership were beyond hopeless, Oldbury were much better but my mum's car still came from Nottingham (FJ-series plates) just got trailered to Oldbury for the completion of the deal. :wallbash:

Insurance is a joke on Alpinas, quote for me at 25 on my mum's B3 Biturbo convertible (took a long time to explain what it was and they kept going back to it being a 3.3 convertible) with 7 years NCB no points etc was over £2k - compare that with £1k for a Nissan GTR and £800 for a C63. So in the end she kept that and I got my E-cab. According to my insurers apparantly I have to now be 30 or over for a "proper" quote. Tax though - £185 per year for a highly polluting B3 something to do with it being classed as an import....? :dk:

There's a black F10 B5 Saloon with black wheels and red detailing on the badges and decals around here that is a total stunner, only offputting thing imo to an Alpina is the 2 year warranty.

I'd like to see that F10 B5. There aren't many E60 B5s around and even less B5Ss - which are up for stupid money.

They were quite helpful even though they knew I was only ever going to be buying a second hand one. I spoke to a guy called Ged Scanlon, and whilst I got the feeling I was a time waster, when I ended up turning up and buying one, surprise surprise they were very helpful...

I will have to be careful what I say on here about BMWs as I might upset a few of the patronising old fart bigots!! ;)

However, the new 5 series is s**t!!
It is has been toned down so much that there really is very little point in going for one any more. It is bland, dull, boring.....yada, yada, yada....!

Now I am sure the new M5 will have corrected most of the downfalls of the standard car but I don't think that will be able to get it feeling anywhere near as focused or as fun as the previous cars. It seems BMW have tried to make their car more, well........more everyday, more liveable, and more conservative. That is not why I buy a BMW!!!
I put up with the badge and the image because they were different to everything else out there, to me I buy a BMW despite the badge, not because of it. But by dumbing down the new 5 series I can't see the point of it anymore, it will now be down to people who buy it because it is a BMW and are completely blinkered, even if they tried an E Class and found it did everything better, which apart from interior and gadgets I honestly think it does, they will still buy the BMW.
There are already loads of BMW owners moving over to Mercedes, so BMW need to be careful, Ultimate Driving Machine is now a slogan that I think is pushing it a little.

I have not seen the Autocar review yet, the E63 vs M5 vs XFR, but it sounded like they said the E63 was the more edgy car, it had out M'd the M or something like that?

I personally like the F10, I'm having one for the weekend soon.

I woudnt rule out a move for one in the future if I like it....

Yeah I've only ever seen one E60 B5S, they are immense cars.. an ex-boss of mine had an E39 B10 3.3 Touring when first released in (shock!) blue and I loved that, I think he still has it as well which is a surprise though I remember going in to his office once and he had an Alpina rug, pictures on the wall, umbrella, jacket, mouse mat... I was like nice M5 with a big grin on my face - don't think he found it so funny.

I can't remember who we spoke to at Nottingham to be honest, but he was a complete plank. More bothered about going on about the "powahhhhhh" which my mum wasn't interested in she just liked the way it looked and sounded. He was helpful in a way but when it came to speccing the car he started getting funny about it having cream leather and being in Alpina Blue with the decals which was a cost option but wasn't an issue, he was insistent on it having black leather and no word of a lie, said he wasn't sure he would go ahead with the sale because of the resale value if the leather got stained/marked....!? at that point I cut him off and told my mum that we'd better go and leave him to it. Got in touch with Oldbury a few months later as they had one up for sale which she bought and loves, only covered 8k miles in nearly 3 years but it's a brilliant car never skipped a beat.

Sounds like He was on extra commission to sell stock cars.

I think he must have been, either that or he was a bit... special.
