Drivers to be banned from picking up mobile phones

You are now becoming disingenuous and deflecting by bringing other issues (satnav, paer maps etc)

" Disingenuous " definition : (of a person or their behaviour) slightly dishonest, or not speaking the complete truth.

My integrity now in the firing line ! ...Great :) (that WAS disingenuous btw).

Please take time to read this post carefully..........

On page 2 My first post (40) was near wholly focused on best use of integrated NAV....This was intended as being in the spirit of this thread. I later referred to maps (post 47) & made various similar NAV , MAP & ATLAS references thereafter (I really don't like drivers using an ATLAS)

Your use of the words "now" & "deflecting" in this context are indicative of me recently "bringing in other issues" I have disproved this. By my standards YOU ARE WRONG.

Doesn't It make sense to sell a phone mount (better than nothing) if handsfree is legal?

Yes - Sure it does..................... I have ZERO issue with this👍
By my standards WE AGREE

I do however, find it amusing that these could be sold by "motoring bodies"* when you prior indicated "motoring bodies" condoning the LAWFUL use of hands-free phones !

Sorry for misjudged humour when I prior asked if you had a Motoring Body  ;)
You are arguing the case for chatting on hands free while "supposedly" in control of a moving car.

I will argue that it is an improper to infer that I endorse casual driving around whilst engaging in random phone chatter & having poor or inadequate control of a vehicle

By my standards WE DISAGREE
There is rising evidence of accidents happening while people were on the phone.

Not seen latest stats, however, this does suggest that all who use a legal hands free phone ( lawfully & more appropriately than others) , will all be likely to be involved in a collision.

I positively welcomed shared comments posted by markjay that gave guidance that calls should only be made if essential & short.... ( I do not recall you flaming that rhetoric ! )

By my standards WE PARTIALLY AGREE

Damn right I'm not going to agree with you or anyone that it is a good thing. I
In life I have respected for many, (not all), strong characters, BUT I often had more respect for those prepared to listen &/or work towards finding some common ground.

By my standards WE DISAGREE

I've been at accident scenes and seen the human carnage in accidents (was a copper) and anything that will reduce that gets a big tick from me!
I wonder how many scenes you attended where mobile phones or in car technology were factors.

By my standards WE PARTIALLY AGREE
Staying with the "horse to water" analogy, "flogging a dead horse" comes to mind and it seems we are set not to agree on handsfree. Be safe.

Suitably ambiguous.........Could be well wishes or worse - Thanks for the kind words 😐

There are plenty of abysmal road users with little regard for the lives of others. If in your eyes I am the epitome this then you have made a serious error of judgement !

PS I never get angry - I enjoy a good debate and going head to head with me, is like wrestling a pig in mud. The pig has fun and you get dirty. :)

P.P.S. Good- I enjoy polite reasoned debate.....(Perhaps you're not be the only pig ;) )

Several things reading this thread has brought to mind...

Question: What iPhone is it that allows the ‘do not disturb, I’m driving’ setting, please? And do you have to remember to activate it each time you get in the car?

Observation #1: I can have my phone in the car boot, yet still access its phone book, and even dial a new number by using the number pad on my Volvo’s (read: car built with safety in mind) stereo keypad.

Observation #2: Even on the subject of safety, human nature allows violent disagreement on so many levels.

On a lighter note, I always have my phone with me, and my RAC card, when out in the JZR - after all it is a kit car which I built myself, so who knows what will go wrong.......

No response required but thank you anyway for responding :)

Exactly the response I expected.😀

I did not respond to the argument you presented.

I didn't say you didn't deserve a serponse.

Subtlies of the English language ;)

I think ‘Do Not Disturb’ is on most iPhones. It’s on my 7 and is active as soon as it auto connects to my car/van. It blocks all alerts and auto replies to text messages. It’s a great idea but still allows phone calls to come through.B8082167-BAA7-43AD-B2C9-3750A254CD53.png

When you say "by my standards" you have destroyed your argument!! Your standards are not the benchmark!

Happy motoring! 😀

Read today that the government plans to allow hands free driving on motorways from next year. So we can't use a mobile phone hands free but can let a car drive itself.

Well, you can let the phone talk to itself....

Shall I ask my Siri to call your Siri?

Hi ,was nearly taken out this afternoon by a driver of a BMW one series texting on his phone turning right at a tee junction.( He just cut the corner )

Did not even see me !!

I get it all the time when I’m on my bike. It’s always my fault!! 🙄🙄

Necrothread revival.
Oh, why not!

Now I'm regularly cycling to work, and often on off-road dual user cycle track on the RHS of the road (wide cycle-footpath) I get a clear view into the cabin of oncoming traffic because it's right next to me. In the morning (because I can see it more easily in that direction on the way to work - on the way home, my back is to the windscreens) I'd guess I see about 25% of people on their phones. I'm not talking about hands free. I'm talking about head down, phone in hand. Obviously they've missed a night of social media updates, gossip and other life threatening information should they miss out for a few minutes. I can see this easily on a bike being a bit higher. In the interests of full disclosure and balance I see a small percentage of people that seem to be hands free on calls btw. Now, that's only 25% of people 'as they are passing me'. I'd guess that most of that 25% put their phone down at some point, and conversely, some of the other 75% pick their phones up. I'm guessing a big proportion of that 75%.

It's that chronic, I'd be all for faraday cages around new cars, immediate car and phone confiscation for auction when caught, and a 3 month ban no excuses. Ridiculously harsh, but it seems that no one gives a pigs curly tail about the law nor the consequences of their risky behaviour.

You can make the penalty whatever you wish, firing squad possibly, but they have to be caught first and that means manpower. Its not going to happen.
This is the nub of it! Very true.

Faraday cages for new cars it is then o_O

Technological advances to build in a 'disabler system' so that the phones don't work.

................... I get a clear view into the cabin of oncoming traffic because it's right next to me. ......
When I was a teenager (1960s & women wore mini skirts) and rode a bicycle, it was great fun looking into cars as I rode past them. ;)

Probably get locked up for that today.

Except that it would block the signal for passengers & you could not be contacted in an emergency.

We need more cops & amputate the hand holding the phone ?
