Just got back from hols in sunny Turkey. Hired a car to buzz around the sights whilst we were there - what an experience!! Things we have seen in just 10 days:
-zero road markings on major dual carriageway, so you can't tell when the road changes between two and three lanes
-zero lane discipline at junctions/traffic lights; cars just squeeze up to the front at the side/between other vehicles to creat an extra 'lane' or two
-little in the way of road signs. What is there is often wrong or misleading
-vehicles often swing onto the wrong side of the road, sometimes for lengthy overtaking round blind bends, and sometimes just for fun
-Traffic light red signals appear to be advisory only...
-motorbikes and scooters appear to have the choice whether to ride on the left or right side of the road - a bit disconcerting on 'motorway' roads
- lots of tractor/donkey carts, without lights after dark, sometimes going the wrong way.
-overloading vehicles seems commonplace. For example, saw a small scooter, with pillion passenger who was holding a small child, and none of them wearing protective gear/helmets.
It was a relief to drive out of Gatwick onto - by comparison - well maintained roads with a generally high standard of driving
