I slow down when children are present on the pavement never mind when people are forced onto an icy carriageway by a ditch.

Agreed. Driving way to fast. He also appears to have had ample room to make a much less drastic change in direction. Point being he would have been unable to avoid anything that got in his way if was driving like that.

I'm wondering whether the people standing in the road weren't hitch-hiking, but trying to warn the driver to slow down.

Lucky in a way?? If you look at the closing speed of the oncoming traffic, could have been one hell of an accident if they had hit! With traffic so close behind etc.

If being on your roof and ruining your day can be called lucky!

Crikey!!! I would have had it in reverse in double quick time if possible.
