Hi
I have a C class coupe C204 (62 plate) and need help on the following please.
Now that winter is coming and I tend to do more driving while the sun is either coming up or setting and I don’t think the conditions warrant all my car lights on. I am trying to get my sidelights and DRL on together only.
I tend to have my lights set to auto and during the day my DRL lights are on then at night all 3 sets of lights are on Main, Side & DRL. I have tried to see if there is anything within the setting for this but not getting this option, it either DRL’s on or off.
I would appreciate knowing if anyone else has had this issue and if there is a way of having just sidelights and DRL’s on.

I hope not. I see far too many cars driving at night with just sides and DRLs.

What's wrong with dipped beam being on too?

I see loads of idiots driving around at night with only DRLs on. Complete blackout to the rear.

I imagine this will prove an insurmountable problem to eradicate by the approach of 'educating' drivers to turn their ****ing lights on in the dark so anticipate eventually seeing DRLs also turning the tail lights on as the norm.

Warning Idiot Alert:

Last year I was given a hire car in the early evening. As I headed off down the A1 I noticed that the dash illumination was on and foolishly assumed that (like my Merc) this meant that my lights were on auto. A quick glance at the light switch seemed to confirm this. WRONG. Several cars flashing and hooting at me as they came up behind me, one of them being an un-marked Police car, who pulled me over confirmed that I was on DRL's only so no rear lights.

Now the Policeman was less than impressed with the car when I showed him why I thought I was lit up correctly. He also agreed that he would have assumed that the lights were on. No excuse. I should have checked. The car was Vauxhall people carrier.

I agree with your comment with regards to needing all lights on during dark but what I am finding is that my merc is putting all lights on when it’s not even dusk thus why I would like to try and get my sidelights and DRL’s working without full headlights.
I know from last year when the lights set on auto my Mercedes tends to put them on even when it’s not even warrant (my opinion) for full headlights.
Thanks for your warning brucemillar and I hope you don't forget to familiarize yourself with a different car before you drive it next time.

My Lexus has adjustable sensitivity auto lights, but even on low sensitivity, I find dipped lights are on sooner than I would choose. I did ask on the Lexus forum if something was wrong, and had similar response to the comments on here.

Having thought about it, I now consider that dipped heads, sides, dimmed DRLs and rears all being lit are better than bright DRLs and no rears, so I'm happy to leave as is, and know I can be seen!!

Hi baxlin
Yes I didn't think I would get the onslaught for what I though was a normal question. never mind each to there own I guess.

I agree also in that I would defiantly prefer to have to much light than not enough. So will be leaving my light switch set to auto (all lights on) if no one knows how to help with my query.

Thanks for your thoughts also. :-)
