Anyone have any idea how hard it would be to drop a C36 engine into my W124?
I guess changing the actual engine would be easy enough but what other parts are different? Is the ECU different?

The C36 engine is based on the inline 2.8. The ECU is different, as are quite a few other things I imagine.

Probably quite possible though, I think there was an E36 towards the end of the W124 timeline.

Excellent article and answered a quetsion I wondered but didn't want to ask.

This may help:

C36
Thanks for that,
Presumably AMG used the 2.8 though because it's a cheaper base of the same engine as the 3.2?

Cheaper? I don't see how a 2.8 costs any more or any less to make than a 3.2. Remember, bigger capacity == bigger holes! ;)

The C280 was shipped in an incomplete form to AMG and it was there that the 2.8 was bored out to a 3.6, they didn't need to find new 3.2 engines to go in then did they? :)

2.8, 3.2, 3.6... all essentially the same block? or am I way off the mark?

Ahh, there wasn't a C320 to start with?

Anyone know the difference between the E320 and E36?

The 124 E36 is based on the 320 Engine, bit more bored out... but yes electronics are different. There was an in depth article in Mercedes Entusiast last yr at some point....

Okay, here's my theory. Buy this and add the ECU from an E36 and Bob's yer uncle?
Thoughts??

Good plan.....

Have a drive out to Germany, chuck it in the boot and drive back....

can i have your 3.2 please ?

ask him what happened to the car Shaun ...

Might be something fixable, depends if the engine was running when it hit the water....

Sorry Howard, that's an M103 (12v). It had to be the M104 (24v).
I was looking forward to a little winter project :(

Ah, sorry.....

There'll be something else come along...... :)

Well if I get the 55 you can fit it and get it running as the winter project :D

I assume this would fit, and is the same as in the E55?

Just sent him an email. Got a reply almost intantly.

It needs to be stripped and re-built.

Hmm £1500 + Stripping / rebuilding, Removal of old engine and fitting. Yeah right. He is having a laugh at that price IMO. £200 tops
