Im looking at purchasing a new duel layer DVD writer,I dont want to pay too much £60ish but has anyone any thoughts as too a good one I have been offered numerous NEC ones but also people have said go for something like plextor or liteon.I quite like the set up on this liteon but its proving hard to get hold of.Cheers Liteon homepage

hey pluggers!

I bought that drive last week from CCL Computers last week, it and the company are both excellent. have ordered many systems worth of stuff from them and have always been prompt and helpful when something has been faulty. (rare for a computer supplier once they have your dosh!)

I bought the liteon one because i had heard of many issues with the NEC ones.

Currently selling at £59.27, stock due tomorrow. Postage is normally £5.50. This is the full retail pack with Nero and other goodies.

I just bought the Sony dual layer DVD for £129 from PC world :( I was after the liteon but alas it wasnt available on the day.

Ive seen a few reviews of the NEC writer and it dont look too good, mainly compatability issues with certain disks so thats out.The liteon comes out quite good! Ive just got to find one now.I shall have to go into town after dinner and have a look at what I can find.

Have been out and bought one just.Managed to get the liteon 832s,Just been delivered to the shop as im waiting :bannana: All bought for £66 inc 25 dvd disks(give me something to practice with now).

The liteon's are essentially re-badged sony drives.

I have a liteon 821s , although this is a single layer drive , with the help of some hacked firmware , it can be modified to write dual layer.

I have the firmware just aint got the balls to flash the drive ......yet !

Well guess what I ballsed up today  Well I am having a poor day.I was putting in my new dvd drive and I sort of pushed it a little too hard and yes you guessed it.Oooooooooooooooppppppppppppppppppppps too far :( Straight through the the back of the drive bay and took out one of the capacitors on the mother board,OH crud!So ive spent the best part of today learing how to put a new mother board in,at least thats fixed now and im back on the net again :bannana:

Just ordered a LiteOn 1633S dual format/layer drive from CCL. Hope its good guys!

Any good software recommendations for copying backing up my DVD collection?

I'm not going to bother with a dual layer writer just yet.

Currently, the media is too expensive - making it uneconomical to routinely use dual layer media.

By the time the media comes down to a reasonable level, the dual layer burners will be much much faster and less than half the price as they are now.

Just buy a singler layer DVD burner for £30-£40 and wait.

You'll come out quids in and with a faster burner to boot in a few months time.

The price of duel layer media is way to steep at the moment as well.Ive seen a pack of 5 selling for £25  Think I will stay with DVD shrink for now :D
