Duff Network Card

I have a home network with 4 PCs hard wired via a router and Cat 5 a couple of laptops, the Wii and an Archos connecting via wireless.

Each time my missus puts her PC on it drags the network down and the network icon in her sys tray calls 'unplugged network cable' every 20 seconds or so. If I shut her PC down the network remains down until I turn the mains power off to her PC.

From a fault finding perspective - does a duff network card sound sensible?

(When I say network I include internet access too - but all is OK once power to the errant PC is removed).

Sounds likely. Have you checked the cable also?

Given the cost of a network card (less than a fiver nowadays) I'd simply put a new one in. May not be that of course but it will eliminate one factor very quickly!

Look at the device manager in the control panel to see any conflicts.

Depending on your computer your ethernet (network) "board" may be integrated onto the mother board. You might have to disable this when you install another discrete PCI bus type ethernet card but should not be a problem. New ethernet hardware does seem the first logical port of call.
