Dumb question time

Clk 230K soon to be SLK R171
Sorry guys, I know I said I'd try not to ask dumb questions BUT....

OK I have a 2001 CLK 230 Kompressor (6 spd manual) coming next week, I have done the deal with a 12 mth mechanical breakdown warranty which tbh is not exactly brilliant and has a £500 maximum claim limit, but as I was scared of major expenses, I thought it was better than nothing (I cant get a better warranty because the mileage is 130K)

I keep reading about mobilo, as I haven't got the manuals in my hands yet I cant check anything, but it looks like mobilo is a form of warranty and may negate the need for the mechanical breakdown warranty that I bought.

Have I misunderstood whats being said about Mobilo on these forums, am I just insane, where are the men with the funny white jackets?

Next STUPID question, is the interior from a CLK cabriolet the same as the interior from a coupe, I'm thinking specifically seats/door cards etc, cos I have seen an advert for a leather interior, and my car is only cloth.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

No such thing as a dumb question rebel - just people who are too dumb to ask!

AFAIK, Mobilo is effectively AA/RAC type cover Europe-wide. I have had reason to use it and was very happy with the service. It is also the mechanism whereby rust warranty is upheld - or not as the case may be.....

I know that the criteria for keeping Mobilo valid is quite tight and believe it involves having your car maintained at a MB authorised dealer. As for the rust warranty - gird your loins for a flood of information from the good people of this forum!

Hope that helps

Hi Reb,

For MB description of MobiloLife click here:

http://www.mercedes-benzlondon.co.uk/new-cars/mobilolife.asp

The scheme appears to only cover breakdowns (as long as car has FMBSH) but if your gearbox goes I suppose you should/could push the car round the corner and see what happens

What would happen? Anyone?

Cheers,

Told to me by a nameless MB service manager:

"Hello, Mobilo? My car has broken down and will not go forwards or backwards and is making funny crunchy noises...."

:D

Mobilo is a recovery/highway assist programme for cars with full MB service. They will fix it at the side of the road or your home if they can or if not get it to an MB dealership. It is not a mechanical warranty.

A warranty with a £500 limit seems a bit on the low side for an MB as that won't cover the cost of many mechanical failure. But as long as the car's been properly serviced and looked after its high milage shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Can't help you on the interior though I'm afraid. I would doubt it is the same tbh. Will depend if electric/heated seats are involved - ie like with like - and while the front seats and door cards may match the rear seats are likely to be different to accommodate the hood.;)

the rear seats are definitely different, and the rear side panels probably different.

the front seats and door panels might be the same but not sure.

its a gamble. Your getting the car for a steal cause its got 130k on it so if anything goes wrong , youve got to offset some of the money from the top end youve saved plus the 500 from each warranty claim.

now , the other thing to remember is . The warranty company have a lot of slack in what they will pay out for as at that mileage there will be a lot of wear and tear excuses. Just make sure the car is tip top when you get it and should be ok.

Mobilo is only valid if each service has been carried out on time at a mercedes dealership with a stamped book and the car has been serviced in the last 2 years i think.

Thanks everyone,
The services have all been carried out at a MB dealer and there are receipts for every single service, but the book itself hasn't been stamped for some reason recently.

The receipts specify chassis number engine number etc and are fully up to date and the last service (B type) was carried out in April of this year, so I can only assume mobilo would have no option but to honour the warranty (or end up in a very costly battle with the consumer association and the legal dept of the RAC etc:)).

Cheers, I guess I will forget the idea of buying that interior then:)

As long as they are at the agreed ASSYST intervals then the fact the book isn't stamped shouldn't matter. You can get it stamped up if the services have been done by a main dealer as they can check the the computer system;)
