No big announcements were made but it has been legal to run a diesel on vegetable/ cooking oil since 30th June 2007 without paying any fuel duty as long as you use less than 2500 litres per annum, (over 20,000 miles at 40mpg).
DieselVeg

Seems quite a few older Mercs can be converted:-
Compatible Vehicle List

Anyone tried this yet?

I did observe a Mitsi Shogun being filled up with Asda's vege oil in the Asda car park the other night. I saw them at the till, trolly full of nothing but veg oil. We thought they maybe ran a local restaurant tor similar, no it was for the car

Seems logical. Common sense from the government. Can this really be true.

I have ran an old Escort Diesel on a 50/50 mix of Morrisons finest veg oil without any problems for over a year now. Don't do it all the time because of the hassle of 3 litre containers.

Hmmmm......don't think I'll be "frying tonight"

Interesting, unlike the government to allow people not to pay tax.

Though I suspect if it becomes common, it will be taxed.

I simply cannot visualise our beloved Mr Brown missing an opportunity to swell his coffers. The time will come. Its must be simply too tempting - a bit like a wiley old fox ignoring the chickens in an unfenced field.

I agree. The government will keep it cheap until such times as as it becomes mainstream and then then pounce.

Remember when they were plugging diesel as a cheaper option... it was way cheaper than petrol once. Then, as more diesel cars took to the roads diesel prices mysteriously closed up on petrol prices.

How do they tax it? Apply it at source so all people who but vegetable oil pay tax? Or only tax it in bottles over 1 litre ? Stop cars and dip them? Then check if they have paid tax on the oil? To be honest it is unpoliceable and the cost would be prohibitive...the same reason why diabetics get free presciptions for all drugs not just their insulin -- its cheaper to monitor it this way...so all they are doing is scoring brownie points and lets face it -- most modern diesels wont be using it or only a very small % blend...:bannana:

My previous Neighbour used to run his diesel on Vegetable Oil/Cooking Oil
and the smell was just like a chippie.... I don't think I could take the embarrassment of driving my Merc with that Veg Oil smell...

no thanks...I'll pay me tax

I was talking to the landlord of my local just now - he's started running his old 4x4 on a 60% diesel/40% old chip oil (and it does smell like it...).

Principally because putting the chip oil in his fuel tank means he doesn't have to pay someone to take it away - he suddenly realised how much that cost! - getting the 'disposal certificate', and dealing with the local authority to prove his old oil has been responsibly disposed of....

Certainly a win-win for him:)

Hope he strains all the sh1t out of it.... cant imagine all the bits would do his car any good
