I turned into a mates street at Hadleigh Essex, and right at the start of his road, was a 55 reg Honda with a wheel clamp, with DVLA on it,I have never seen one before, maybe the DVLA are hitting back at cars without tax :bannana:

I too live in this area but have never seen a car with a DVLA clamp on.
I thought they towed cars away that they found un taxed?

Living and commuting in Manchester, I see a couple a week. Usually cars parked on side streets to avoid paying for car parks.

Wheel clamp and big sticker saying "Untaxed Vehicle".

I have seen a few.

My favourite was when they used to pull cars over to the side of the road and while one guy was talking to (distracting) the driver another would nip around the rear nearside and slap a clamp on.

It happened to a mate in a company car, he was furious!

Well if you turn off the A13 after you pass the one way bit past Hadleigh Church turn down Woodfield Road and then first right, you will see it,seen loads of parking ones but this says DVLA,they must be dishing out the addresses of cars that have not renewed or been sorned. :D

This happened within my firm, completely innocently and all because of a misunderstanding by me and a mistake by DVLA and I am still trying to sort it out!

I am in Lancashire, car is near London, driver very young. He was given the tear off bit of the V5 (V5C?) but did not send it to me until the clamp was put on his car. He did not realise the car had not been taxed, I assumed he understood the rules. But the worst of it is that whilst the dealer assures me the V5 was sent to DVLA, DVLA did not process it and so tax reminders were going to the previous owner who did nothing but bin them, clearly. We were fined over £200, but the biggest problem is that DVLA have not yet rectified the problem (dealer assured me he would deal with it) and I have not yet got the V5.

you could fill in a form v62 from the post office and get a new v5 that way, only takes 2-3 weeks, then present the dealer with a bill for the £25 it will cost you

i thought the dvla had always clamped untaxed or uninsured motors and gave about a week to get the tax/insurance before they removed it

i posted earlier this year a clip of a guy smashing up his car because it was clamped for no tax http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/driving-incidents-roadrage/204964-no-car-tax-guy-trashes-own-car.html

Not sure what this guy was trying to acheive. Make sure the DVLA won't get any money when auctioning his car? Does he really think they care? The DVLA is not a private business... its officers are just public servants going about doing their job, it's nothing to them how much the car actually fetches. But if it makes this tax disc dodger feel better discharging his aggression in this way... then I supposed it served a purpose.

Due to a DVLA cockup, even though I'd paid, my car was registered untaxed (and not owned by me) for 11 months last year.

In all that time, i was completely unaware of their mistake so drove around without looking over my shoulder.

I also didn't get any Clamps, Plod-pulls, enforcement camera snaps or "your car is untaxed" summonses through the post.

We're told that ANPR cameras are everywhere and the Police state we live under won't allow untaxed/uninsured cars to use the roads without being caught..

For whatever reason, that doesn't seem to be the case.

I find it easier now to change ownership on line via DVLA You can do this while you have the new owner there with you so it helps to make it a smooth process. Only issue i believe is if you have a car thats been imported or a private plate on this maybe needed to post to DVLA.
Once you have done the online process you do not need to post off your V5

With regard to V62, I spoke with the dealer who assured me he would deal with it (still no V5 and the chap is on holiday until 26/08). If I now do a V62 I may confuse the issue if the dealer has also started the process.

I'm just going to wait until the dealer (main dealership) is back, ask him if he has actually done the process, ask him why not if he says no, then if he has not, start the process. At present the vehicle is taxed and the DVLA says it has no registered keeper. Hopefully one more week will be okay, we're not trying to defraud anyone.

They clamp here 1-2 times a year

There are said to be about a million uninsured drivers on our roads (although nobody knows the real figure of course) and the number of unlicenced / disqualified drivers can also only be guessed at. There are nearly 600,000 untaxed cars (the figure has risen markedly since the abolition of paper tax discs) too.

ANPR is useful as a revenue raising tool, allows the authorities to be seen to be doing something about the problem and is good copy for all the late-night-motorway-interceptors-with cameras programmes who tell us that all of these illegal drivers "are being driven off our roads" and that "the bad guys can't hide and have nowhere left to run".

However, the reality is that, despite all the new technology, we have just as many uninsured / untaxed / unlicenced drivers as we have always had.

This could be cured by fitting ANPR cameras above each fuel pump at all stations, pump simply shuts off and police receive a notification. If they can't buy fuel, they can't drive around

Although I'd then suspect a rise in sales of diesels again and a rise of diesel theft from lorries to get round this

Many forecourts already do an automated check on your registration, presumably to block people who have previously driven off without paying. So it could be done relatively easily, if there was a mechanism to distribute a DVLA blacklist.

And if they are happy to crawl underneath parked cars to grind off the catalytic converter they will think nothing of puncturing your fuel tank to drain off your petrol.

Where there's a will......

Isn't this an issue for the DVLA?

As long as my costs don't increase then I'm not particularly bothered about punishing non-payers, the levy is apparently dictated by emissions not income potential.

There doesn't seem to be such outrage at people choosing to avoid other taxes such as inheritance tax.
