Am in between cars at the moment (long story!) & wondered if I can buy a personalised plate from the dvla in advance of me receiving my car?

when u buy a plate it will be put on retention automatically, previously it was on 1 year retention and u pay £25 pa to keep it on retention as of last year and due to reduction in work force it was decided that retention renewals will be FREE and validity of 10 years. i feel sure when you buy it now it goes automatically on 10 years retention certificate. be careful choosing the nominee as this who has the car for the plate to go on.

nominee is different though the certificate nominee name if required to be changed will still attract £25 fee.

if u transferring plates on retention boldreg.co.uk provide a service for £100 and sometimes do it on the spot electronically if u want plate off your car as you sell.

they do perform sales transaction they charge a flat 10% to buyer to move plate from car or certificate. and provide very good and swift service.

we advertise on ebay and once a buyer is located we directy him their to get the job done.

win win for all

Yes you can buy in advance and as the previous poster states you will received a retention certificate valid for 10 years. usually this arrives within 5 working days or less in my experience

When buying your car you can either ask the dealer to put the plate on for you or once you receive the V5 document with you as the registered keep, go online and its done instantly there and then.

Buying the plate direct from the DVLA website saves you £££

I bought mine on retention, then sent the V5 logbook with the document to register the new number plate once I had bought the car I intended to put it on.

Yes as everybody has said if you buy from DVLA the retention cert will be in the price you pay,and I believe that you can also put the reg on your new car online now,I believe somebody posted that a few months ago,I must admit I always sent the log book off with the retention cert it is very easy

I bought a personalised plate from the DVLA site a few months ago, very quick and easy (especially given that it's a .gov site:D). Got a retention certificate in the post a day later. Getting it onto the new car was equally strait forward, provided you have the v5 (you need a check digit which is on the v5 next to the registration mark) all done online. I had also been warned about nominees. DVLA is cheapest source by far, I was quoted over £120 extra by one site for same plate!

I took a plate of a car I sold, put the old one back on and put mine private one on the new car all on line, really quick and easy. Had to wait for V5 but much improved system.

. be careful choosing the nominee as this who has the car for the plate to go on.

I'm not so sure this is true? My wife was the nominee named on the retention certificate but the car is registered in my name. DVLA was quite happy with that.

Ditto for this.
I bought a plate in Mrs Ted's name, but have assigned it to my car.

Not true.... many dealers offering DVLA held plates cheaper than DVLA are selling them for! YES I do mean including VAT and transfer..

OK, maybe only £5 usually, but thats enough to buy a pint.
