Gentlemen, I'm in need of help. I've scored 3 out of 6 with the glowplugs, and need to remove the cylinder head. Yes I've tried the drilling out method but fear that I've damaged the thread on the first one I've attempted. So I think it's best to take head off. If I've damaged it can it be welded?

Any guidence on this; I've done a 3.6 XJS head gasket before so I'm not completely useless at this sort of thing but thats a petrol and its the diesel bits I'm not sure about. Do I have to take the injectors out and if so do I need a special tool for that? Then there is the timing and not dropping the chain into the sump etc.

Any suggestions in my hour of need much appreciated !

Bill,

It's pretty straight forward with no particular problems.

I had the same issue (stuck glow plug) on my OM605 which is basically the same minus one pot and a turbo.

Wire up the timing chain sprocket to the chain and leave in situ.

Head bolts are not cheap and should be replaced as they stretch, head gasket, go for the metal composite.

Let me know and I can dig out the company I used for the head, they removed the stuck plugs followed by a skim which is recommended, also suggest replacing the valve guide seals.

No special tools but will need a good torque wrench as the head bolts need to be spot on :thumb:

Ahhh.. I just thought of one special tool which is needed for removal of the steel dowels.

You can make one easy enough though using a high tensile bolt and socket, this works quite well - alternatively buy the MB tool which I believe is a mini sliding hammer.
