E class estate 280CDI sport
Hi all, new member here.

I have just purchased from Robinsons MB at Cambridge a 2006 E class 280 CDI sport with 63000 on the clock.

You may have answered this question lots already so forgive me... but does this model have a timing chain? or belt?
I have read that they all have chains:confused: is this true? and if so what is the recommended times to start thinking about some adjustment or replacement?

Many thanks
Craig

My chain snapped at110k. V expensive

Is currently at £650 for fitting but work has stopped as the engine I brought for £550 is a newer version and having lots of complications. So far, with sensor changes before finding out chain had snapped is at £1,400. Still a lot to go though. My mechanic is arguing with 24/7 spares where I sourced the replacement engine. Hopefully get some money back.
From what I have read on here, the type of oil (SAPS) has an effect and the tensioner is another cause of snapping.
Suppose I just have bad luck!

24/7 are cowboys... They deal with the type that sky news did an expose on recently.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I got the wrong engine, had to fight for months for a replacement, has now been replaced with another different engine. Refusing to refund me and have openly said they don't care about trading standards or the law. Am currently putting a small claim into the court. Has cost me a fortune, and been a nightmare!

We went through a similar thing with an audi, trading standards are a waste of time as is the whole small claims process.

These are career criminals, they will simply fold and reopen under a new name. We had to cut our losses.. We spent more than what audi quoted to rebuild the car with a two year warranty.

Well,as luck would have it. When I originally ordered it, they would not accept my card as I am not on the electoral register, so my sister paid on hers. We were trying to fight it thru her bank, but I went thru my statement and they had taken 540 from me too. I cancelled the transaction as fraud, bank refunded. Then called them and they refunded my sister and faxed the receipt with a letter stating... This is refund for Mercedes CLK Engine. So I now have all the money back, and emailed them thanking them for the refund and saying the incorrect engine is ready for collection at their convenience. Doubt I will see the money I have thrown as a result though. Especially as I have to go thru the sherif courts in Scotland. Have instructed mechanic to rebuild original engine. Not going thru this again! Had to get my sister to cancel her card tho. They won't be happy when they lose the other money as well.

My bank are now not covering as fraud, and taken money back. Am getting original engine rebuilt now, but engine shop saying they will take me to court for £1,000 for not returning it, and will not accept the incorrect engine back. My mechanic said today£750 for parts and labour to rebuild and fit original engine. On top of the £700 he has already had, the 2 sensors I brought following green flag advice before finding out chain had snapped at £120 each and comp specialists. Nightmare
