e class 320 noise

I'm in the process of buying an e class 320 saloon, 1996/97 with 87,000 miles. As it goes through the gears there seems to be excessive engine and gearbox noise which quietens down when top is engaged. Nothing alarming, just overall noise. I am coming from and old 260e which seems much quieter. Perhaps it's just my paranoia, any help would be much appreciated as I need to complete the sale. Many thanks Peter.

presumably this is a w210? Is it an auto or manual box?
