Hi all,

I have a 2012 E class coupe with 7g gearbox and its clunky when shifting at low speeds, i was going to get a gearbox software update and reset done as ive read that the procedure on the internet for resetting the gearbox yourself doesn't actually work. Has anyone had this done and how much was it? thanks :thumb:

i am not sure anyone has actually done it, they are all the same, clunky and slow in the city but better on quicker roads.

They are built for the motorway.

TCU software update is dealer job via STAR (some specialists will do this as well, though most won't).

But the best way of dealing with automatic transmission issues is by having the ATF and filter changed first.... your car is now 5 years old, so it's due anyway. Or has this been done already?

yeah the ATF and filter was changed at the last major service, are the dealers the only ones capable of doing an adaption reset?, the put the key into pos 2 and push the accel pedal down for 2mins etc procedure doesn't seem to work http://www.mercedesmedic.com/reset-mercedes-benz-transmission-procedure-instructions/. Just the car is a bit of a bunny with hopping at low speeds but as the above suggests maybe it is just how this gearbox works.

I had my ATF changed and the latest software update for the TCU and my gearbox is not perfectly smooth, but about 70-80% better. A good indy should be able to do this. I had mine done at PCS

Actual software updates require official STAR with subscription - quite pricey, and most indies won't have it.

In addition there's always a risk of bricking the transmission during software update, the dealer won't care as they will simply throw their T&C at you and quote for a new TCU (or new transmission...), but a good indie will rely on reputation and will know it's not a good idea to fob customers off, so might not want to engage in an ordeal that could see him foot the bill for repairs.

This is why in practical terms a software update is dealer only.

We do the update for £50 with a Star.

Steve Garlick at Stevensons carries out gearbox software updates.

My 7g is as smooth as you like in all situations.

I made sure the whole car was updated to the latest firmware revisions before I bought it from MB.

So it is possible!

Aren't there different versions of the 7g box? With larger-engines cars having a different one that handles more torque? Maybe I'm imagining this but it's what I thought I'd read. Mine is also super-smooth, shifts are barely noticeable.

was there any tranny software update on the w202 C43 AMG during it's selling period back in 1998-2001?

do you offer tranny update for w202 C43 in your shop?
if you don't mind me asking, how many owners did a tranny update for C43 over the years?

tranny software update was discussed several times on US forums due to aggressive shifting and tranny failiure

As far as I know, they only made one 7g box and it is the same throughout.

They've created a revision to it for the BlueEfficiency era (7g Plus from around 2010 I think).

Back when the E55K was out, they had to use the 5g (722.6) box because the torque was too much for the 7g to handle.

Similarly, they've used the 5g in the V12s previously.

Im booked in at PCS for Friday so will let you know how i get on with the software update

Thanks, that's really interesting to know. Thinking back, my assumption about different versions of the 7g box came in part from driving an A-class diesel on which the 7g box was really quite clunky. Does each engine perhaps have different software to optimise changes for that engine, with varying levels of success?

I had a 2012 c220 and gearbox in that was clunky from day one, Mercedes tried numerous updates and resets but it never really improved. It used to think you in the back when changing down to first especially when cold. Box in my 2015 e220 coupe is as smooth as silk when hot or cold.

The original A class I think used a regular slushy and then they switched to a 7 "speed" CVT which is in reality only 1 gear with 7 "locked" ratios. So it doesn't change like a regular slushy or MCT-style box.

C Class uses the 7g I believe.

I hear the current 9g is smooth from release so maybe they did a bit more work on this one rather than letting customers test it for them.

Ah - that makes sense, thanks!

Saying that, I don't know why you had that experience...

We bought a Honda Jazz once with a CVT and it also had 6 or 7 "locked" ratio settings with paddle shifts (yes, a complete waste of time in a 1.4 Jazz) to give you the impression it had gears.

Was smooth as you like.

Then again, I've read MB CVT boxes have quite a few issues, I think, when the fluid is not kept in check. Been a few horror stories come up on here before so maybe the one you drove had issues...
