I need to remove either the front or rear ashtray in my 2008 E280cdi auto in order to gain access to the wiring on either of the cigarette lighters. I want to hardwire a sat nav.

Does anyone have instructions to do this? The wiring is not my concern, just the physical removal of trim to access the rear of the sockets.

    Any help and advice appreciated.

    Roger.

    Welcome!

I don't have it to hand, but if you do a search on this forum it has been covered a number of times.

Very easy to do - even I managed it!

Put the car into drive and then turn the car off. This moves the gear selector out of the way.

Prise up the gear selector surround with a plastic wedge.

Pull up the wood/aluminium trim. It can be quite stiff. It is held in with clips thats all. This exposes the front of the ash tray. Carefully prise the two plastic clips away from the front towards the back of the car. This unlatches the ashtray. It then simply slides out revealing the wiring. Five minutes tops....

    clarification.....

The gear lever is in a sort of oval panel (wood) with a chrome trim and it encompases the C/M/S switch, set into a larger panel. Do I prise up the inner panel first then the outer one?

    Bit worried something will snap.....

    Roger.

    Roger,
Why not pick up the power freom the fuse box on the end of the dash (driver side)?

Inner panel first. Carefully ease it up round the edge.

You will be very unlucky to snap anything. It is all made to clip together.

Can you tell me what fuse to use Roger please. I want to use a piggy back fuse holder rather than pull out the ash tray.

Hi. The thread is 10 years old. You may however still receive an answer, possibly not from Roger. I am sure someone will be able to help.
