Hi all,

can anyone assist and tell me if I would require any specialist tools, or caliper press's, etc, in order to replace the rear or front pads on a '52' 2002 E class 270cdi. Or indeed any useful tips (apart from 'take it to a garage!').

I would appreciate any info as I dont want to strip the cailpers from their mountings to find the car is U/S for several days whilst sourcing specialist tools.

Many thanks

You won't require special tools but as the car is fitted with SBC you do need to be aware that you must NOT either insert the key into the ignition or open the drivers door, otherwise the SBC will operate and gradually press the pads in.

One method is to disconnect the main SBC connector with the ignition off, to ensure this can't happen.

If its got the sensontronic brake by wire system [which from your age of car it has ]
then CERTAIN precautions have to be taken to disable the electronics. These are not difficult but you got to know what you are doing. there are posts here about this. Others more familiar with the system than me will undoubtedly chip in soon. be sure to use thread locker and a torque wrench on the caliper mounting bolts when you replace them
edit;- dieselman got in before me.

I did mine by disconnecting the battery, a friend did his by unplugging the pump, this would seem to be the best way and it is part of the MB training program, and when the ignition is turned on it all goes red,, this was all part of the training. you can then press the brake pedal a few times but since it is fly by wire, it may not do anything, just leave it 10 mins on unplugging the pump.
I believe your pads are on held in with the 2 pins, both front and rear, and this part is conventional .Some cars like my SL have the ATE rear brakes where you have to remove the caliper held on with the 2 x 7mm allen screws
I can do mine without changing the lock on the steering, do fit the sensor wires in the same holes as the originals.

As said above if you can't get at a star diag to disable it then pull the battery, unplug the SBC or just keep the keys out of the ignition and the door shut.

If you disconnect the SBC you will still have fall-back brakes so the system should work but sluggishly if you need to test it out.

thanks all for your advice
