Hi,

I'm after advice whether timing chain needs changing as a precaution at around 120k miles? I was advised by an independedent mechanic that the chains seems to go at around 115k/120k on OM651 engines. Also sometimes they can go, without making any sounds indicating the problem. I'm not very technical, so any help would be appreciated.

The car seems to be fine and no noise at the moment - should I change it or leave it alone?

Thank you

Leave it alone.

You'll know when it needs changing, the noise will be very noticeable.
They don't just go, and no need to replace just in case.
You'll read a lot of horror stories about the OM651 engine, we have a fleet of Sprinters, varying mileage from 47,000 up to an interstellar 384,000.
None of which has ever had a timing chain problem.
Service the car as per schedule and you will be rewarded with many miles of trouble free motoring

they made some improvement to timing mechanism around 2009, however chain is still the same. Keep eye on it (or ear like said).

I have a C250 cdi and I thought mine was rattling at start up, its been to a merc specialist twice now but he couldnt replicate the noise on cold start up. I get a mettalic tapping noise for 1-3 seconds on cold starts but not always!
I'm thinking this is not the chain now and something else like a heat shield or exhaust related? Its not a tappet noise as I would recognise that.

The garage said you "WILL" know when its the chain and it does make a rattle noise on cold starts.

But I think all these possible issues have been sorted. For now I am going to carry on driving as the car drives perfectly.
Mine is a 2012 C250 cdi with 89K on the clock. For now, I'm not worried.
So unless you hear a loud rattle at cold start you should be fine.

The garage did say he has done a couple of chains but not until the cars reach the many hundreds of miles!

308k and running well on mine, leave well alone if it is not noisy.
