Hi all, I have a 62 plate E class coupe with the 7G gearbox and am having some issues with it occasionally not changing gear smoothly when driving slow in traffic around 2-3rd gears so wondered does any one know the correct procedure for doing a gearbox reset/relearn? I've read a few online and they slightly differ from each other and trying to find the correct one for my car.

I have driven a few mercs with these 7G gearbox (my car got the same too) and they're all the same. I don't think these 'lazy' gear changes are down to a fault or can be rectified by a reset. At lower speed in comfort mode it likes to move to a higher gear whenever possible, when I put my foot down I get a bit of turbo lag when it decides to go down a gear, then it does it all over again, so it's a bit indecisive in traffic.

Now I just drive in 'sport', it hangs onto gears a bit longer and don't change as much.

There are other ways of course like a remap. The new 9G in newer models seem to have solved this.

Thanks that's helpful to know it's common in the 7g boxes, I'll try using sport more often and see how that goes

In my handbook MB recommend using Sport Mode all the time......my motor has no lag at all changing in this mode. It only changes gear also depending on how you use the throttle, if you are heavy with it it will hang on to the gear but if a light throttle will change up gently just as Comfort Mode.

It is how you drive what dictates the gearbox changes and not the other way around!....eg: if in C mode it will start in 2nd gear but if you floor it then it start`s in 1st gear just like S mode!

After all C mode means what it states comfort so why should it jerk and change quickly. If you want to suddenly put your foot down to cause a lag then you should be driving in C mode?
