I have a 99 E240 Estate (2.4L engine) and am thinking of going diesel with a 2003 E220CDI (still W210) but I am having difficulty comparing the power and torque figures.

The E220 CDI seems to give 143 BHP with 315 NM. but for my 2.4 the figures vary from 136-170 BHP and 190-225 NM. My handbook does not even list the 2.4L engine.

Can anyone tell me what the official figures are for the 2.4L? but more importantly, am I likely to be dissappointed by the performance of the diesel?

My manual lists E240 as 125 kw and 240 nm torque

Dont forget diesel will have more torque and rev less than e240.

Best to google 220cdi engine problems in fact google any cdi engine problems then keep the 240:D

Thanks for the reply. Is your manual for the 2.4 or facelifted 2.6?

Its actually for the 4.3! its a facelift model 2001 so am assuming its the correct manual def says 2.4.

Thanks again for the reply.

I would like to think I have 125kW (167 bhp) but unfortunately mine is a pre facelift 240 with a 2.4L engine. The facelift 240 has a 2.6L engine (2597 in your manual), so I'm still unsure what power and torque I get.

Anyone got a pre facelift manual with the details for my car?

Phil

The E220 CDI is better all round than the E240, it will last longer, it will accelerate better than the 240 engine, it will get much better MPG and it will not depreciate like an E240 does. The 6 cylinder petrol 240 engine is very smooth indeed, but I fear that is all it is good for

This is only my opinion btw

Terry.

Thanks for your opinion. I do love the smoothness of the V6, but I am very tempted by 50 mpg, particularly doing 16-18k/yr.

does anyone have experience of both engines? and what about a 320 CDI?

Phil

The 2.4L is rated at 170Bhp@5900rpm and 225Nm@3000-5000rpm.

Phil,
I have a Jan 2003 W210 auto 220 cdi estate and bought it when 6 months old as an ex MB management car.It has now done 115,000 miles and is going to see Olly for a health check in mid June. Not because I have problems but because I want to know if it is capable of lasting another 7 years and 115,000 miles!

It is an excellent vehicle with plenty of power (for me).It is super smooth, quiet, reliable, rust free and always gives 50 mpg plus on journeys in excess of 50 miles.Current tyre wear is 42,000 miles for all 4 tyres.
It is not a boy racer`s car and if treated with respect will reward its owner admirably.

I wish you well in your quest.
Happy motoring

Regards

John

I have experience of all three engines, first, as I said, the V6 240 engine is very refined and smooth, but is known to be underpowered and heavy on fuel, probably no better consumption than that of an E320 petrol, but much less power.

Second, the E320 CDI is a magnificent engine, all the power you want, will last a lifetime if serviced regularly, but unfortunately will not deliver the MPG that I think you are looking for, its known to be much heavier on diesel than the 220 or 270 diesel engines

Third the E220 CDI I have, I found to be a little underpowered, so I opted for a Superchip from Germany for £95 delivered, which up's the power from 143hp to around 174hp and more torque, fitted it myself which takes about 10 minutes and it now returns me around 40-45mpg and at the moment I am using it to learn the Knowledge to become a london Taxi driver, so it is all town driving including a lot of stopping and starting and on a run, I can achieve 50 plus mpg every time.

Very rare in the 210 model, but if you could find an E270 CDI, that is the best of the bunch, smooth delivery, plenty of punch, combined with great fuel economy, all from a fantastic engine,

Good Luck with your search,

Regards,

Terry.
