Avis couldn't supply me with a Touran this week so had to make do with an E Class 220 CDI saloon for a 1000 km on mainly autobahns over 4 days.

What was good : Cruising at 160 km/h was not a problem. Economy was indicated at 7 L/100 km (40 mpg) - excellent. MB sat nav was excellent, easy to use and it offered to recalculate the route when the road ahead was blocked.

What was average : Noise levels, this 2148cc engine is noisier than my 2151 cc CDi in my W202 C Class, it seems like you can hear every explosion, whereas mine sounds quiter except when asked to grunt. The brake pedal was heavy and required a good old shove to prevent collision with a fuel pump as I had to slow from 160 to zero in the motorway services entrance.

What was less than good : Ability to proceed in snow. OK so it was 30 cm deep and -4.0 C outside, but the Merc was overtaken by Renault Clios with snow tyres. Avis said I have to give 4 weeks notice in order to have snow tyres !

Overall, would I buy it ? Probably !

Don't know what the UK list price is, but I suspect around £30k.
