e220 cdi 2001 MAF issue

Hi Folks.

Merc newbie here, picking up a e220 cdi (92k) for my mrs this week once it's been put through mot.

There is a intermittent fault with the MAF I was told sometimes its lack really power, I noticed this on the motorway on a test drive but then stopped and started again and it was fine?

Whats the best way to find out if it's the maf, can I just unplug it, and what would I be looking for in symptoms?
