Hello!

This is my first post.
Sorry for my lame english.
A good friend of mine have MB E220 cdi year 1999.
The problem: sometime, the turbo shot down, and the car will go to limp mode.
Need to turn off and on ignition.
We replaced the wastegate control valve. No success.
Any idea ?
What can we check ?

regards

Gabor

Need to get it on a Mercedes Dealer computer to find out real reason for shutdown and fault. No good second guessing problem.

Could be a number of reasons - the owner of W210 (that I know) was describing the same symptons as you and the problem was related to the gear box/auto transmission. Sometimes it could be basic as just changing the fluid/oil otherwise perhaps s a new gear box. The Stealer has all the diagnostic equipment to be able to immediatley diagnose the cause. You will have to at least invest in folking out the cost for the inital diagnosis which would be at least 1HR labour...

There are a number of factors that can cause the car to go into limp mode... error codes are neede dto relate to the problem...

Hello!

Thank you for the answer!
I will check the error codes with my laptop. And will write here.
About auto trans. maybe this is the problem, this car have little problems with transmission ....

How is the catalyst? A common fault for these cars is for the pre cat (right up by the turbo) starts to break up, bits of it then partially block the main cat. Usually the only fault stored in this case is for underboost pressure.

Sorry, misread your first post. You changed the wastegate valve, you mean the vacuum one near the coolant bottle?

As ignition resets the fault its not very likely to be the cat, unless its only just started breaking up. Once they have been rattling around for a while you lose boost totally. Its most likely the turbo (I know thats not what you want to hear) but the turbos fitted to these cars in 99 were problematic.

They don't have a conventional wastegate but instead use a motor to adjust the angle of lots of small fins around the outside of the impellors to increase or decrease the speed of gases entering the turbo. The fins in those turbos are prone to sticking meaning the ecu can't vary the boost. This will store a fault.

My money is on the turbo, fault codes will hold the answer!
