E220 coolant loss

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help on this rather puzzling problem. I have a W124 E220, 1995. It has the M111 engine with 120,000 miles. It starts runs, drives and performs just like a Swiss watch, NEVER misses a beat, has never let me down in any way in the 2 years of my ownership of it.

The coolant level, however, does go down regularly. By that I mean, I would top it up to the correct level in the coolant reservoir, and within a day or two it would drop approximately a pint. If it's left without being topped up again the level would drop further.

Nevertheless there is no evidence at all of coolant loss anywhere. Rad, water pump, t/stat housing, hoses, heater, cyl. block all seem ok. No signs either of engine burning coolant.

Anyone have any ideas please?

Have the system pressure tested and the coolant checked for combustion gas contamination.

Check the bottom of the water pump. They are so common on that engine as it the rad leaking.

As DM says a pressure test is a must.

Thanks for the advice guys. Will do that as soon as weather improves here. Pouring with rain all day today here in London.
