Totally agree but he said he can’t look at it properly today and to just keep an eye on it and to top up with water if needed.
I had to take it to this garage as it’s where I was sent by the dealer I bought the car off and need to stay under his warranty you see.

Can we clarify- did you buy this car from an MB dealer-who exactly provided the warranty- and is this an MB workshop that's assessing the car?

No just a standard used car dealer.
I took out platinum RAC warranty myself but with only buying the car earlier this month surely it should all still be down to the dealer to get sorted?!
The garage that did the suspension work and who looked at it this morning is an indy garage.

Getting it looked at by my trusted indy garage later and see what he says and go from there.
If it’s just a pipe then no big deal if it’s more than that then...

I didn’t know you could still rewind vehicle mileage. Thought that was a thing of the past!
I checked all the online MOT history of the car before buying it and the mileage all seemed to tally up?

Well that's a good sign at least. The problem with complex modern high mileage cars is their increased propensity for bits to begin to "drop off"- even Mercedes

So my mechanic has taken off the under tray and can see coolant dripping from the front of the engine near the pulleys. His guess is water pump but without taking bits off, he won’t know for certain!

Car went back to garage this morning and they confirmed water pump had gone. Rang me after just 2hours to say it’s all done and ready for collection! Seemed very quick to diagnose, source part and fit to me? I’m very cynical though.
No coolant warnings on dash now but were a couple of drops from under tray which he said is normal and is nothing to worry about.
Will keep an eye on it.
What do you guys think?

Water pump is a known weakness, the originals were made of plastic, not sure about the replacements. Had mine replaced by Mercedes but it had done many more miles than yours.

Its the only part that has failed on mine.

Other than visually checking the pump has been replaced all you can do is run it and keep a sharp eye on the coolant level and warning light. Its such a common engine/problem many motor factors will stock replacements. They may well have used a pattern part sourced locally.

This won't be far behind either as they've redesigned that too .

My chocolate £1000 per claim warranty doesn't cover any leaks of any kind and the crook used dealer Mercedes specialist ( well more Mercs than any other ) too doesn't want to know , so it's a Small Claims court job .

The repairing Mercedes specialist said RAC Warranties were good .

So been keeping an eye on the coolant and have had no visible leaks from under tray but the warning on the dash has come on a couple of times when I’ve started the engine (when cold) but goes out once warm. Do you think the level needed time to settle after the new pump was fitted and there isn’t quite enough in there when sat cold but rises when warm? If that’s makes sense.

I recently fitted a new water pump to mine, topped up the lost coolant and ran up to temperature, opened the heater control valve fully and waited for the burp. Topped coolant up again and road tested,no leaks or coolant loss. I would top the header tank up again and see how you go with it.

When cold and when parked on a flat level surface, the coolant level should be slightly above white plastic part of the reservoir, basically the level should be within black part. There shouldn't be any empty space visible through white plastic.

1. These messages can be spurious - check if the coolant level is actually low.

2. Any leak needs to be investigated - these systems never lose coolant under there's a fault somewhere.

3. The coolant is made up of 50% water. If you only need to top up a tiny amount, just top it up with soft water. It won't have any noticeable on the overall concentration.

4. The original MB coolant needs replacing only evert 15 years. So as long as there isn't a leak nothing needs to be done. But that's of course assuming that your car still has the original coolant.

Can someone please give me the part number of expansion tank cap for OM651 engine. For the life of me I can’t find it and the it’s not holding tight.
