Hi, I am interested in views on a 2nd hand E220 coupe [hard-top] with 99,000 miles on the clock. 4 previous owners, full MB service history. 1996 [I think]. It looks very clean, and garage says it is spotless [they would !!]. On the Compucar website at London Cars Direct. I have a really nice 1998 C180 with 69 k miles, and am thinking of changing, but is the E220 here worth £5995 with that mileage ? This is not a daily use car, just for week-ends. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks all.

Looks OK, it's got non standard wheels on which suggests it has been played around with , either the original wheels were lost , stolen or sold , any aftermarket wheels not in an OEM style for that era of car always make me suspicious ........

£6k is steep for that car with that mileage on it ..... although it does say £4995 in the text of the advert .... which is still steep ..

You could get an absolutely immaculate e320 for that money ( in a better colour too)

Says it has headlight washers , which it doesn't have , looking at the picture ....

You could do a lot better for six grand ....

Hi, thanks Howard. Interesting reply about the wheels, to be honest I hadn't noticed that. I thought the bit about headlight washers was a bit odd okay !!! The thing about the E320 etc is that I am in Dublin, and we have to pay road-tax in relation to engine HP, so an E220 is about £375 a year, but an E320 is about £600 a year, some difference !!
Thanks for your reply, maybe I will keep looking.

@ Peterjones, its more like €1,343 or Stg £ 904 in tax ;)

Why not have a look on carzone.ie and try to pick up one in Ireland with the VRT already paid?

Take the one you are talking about, did you check the VRT? here it is:

VEHICLE REGISTRATION TAX (VRT) ENQUIRY
DATE: 17 February 2007 TIME: 23:00

STATISTICAL CODE: 40187446
MAKE: MERCEDES-BENZ
MODEL: 220
VERSION: CE 02DR A / SPORTS COUPE (NON-CONVERTIBLE) / AUTOMATIC / PETROL ONLY /
MILEAGE: 99000 MILES

The information requested in respect of the vehicle shown is indicated below.
DATE OF FIRST REGISTRATION(MM/YY): JANUARY 1996
OPEN MARKET SELLING PRICE:
(applicable on enquiry date) €8187
RATE OF TAX: 30.0%
VEHICLE REGISTRATION TAX:
(payable on enquiry date) €2456

Taking that into account, your Stg 5995 = € 8,908 + VRT of € 2,456 = € 11,364 on the road in Ireland excluding ferries etc!

That one at € 5950 on Irish plates still leaves plenty of change for a leather retrim.

There are loads more too.

Hi Howard, Graeme, I had a look just now at the website, and would you believe that the wheels have been changed. I saved the pages from the site last week, and the car has original Merc wheels, but I see now there are some kind of after-market jobs. It looks a bit naff !! It looks pretty smart with the original wheels.

Hi Gearoid, yes, I have looked at the VRT issue etc, and I agree with your figures except my mistake is that the particular example is a 95, not 96. So the cost is about 10k to buy and import. The main things tend to be - most of the UK versions have aircon AND sunroof. If you ask around the dealers here they will tell you Irish cars only have EITHER aircon, or sunroof but very rarely both. Also the examples on Carzone, look at the mileages on them, all well ove rthe 100k. Better to buy a lower mileage from the UK. I am also looking at an E230 saloon, and I went to look at three cars on Saturday, one in Lucan, one in Maynooth and on on the Naas road, all around 97. They are all described as VGC, excellent condition etc. but my idea of VGC is somewhat different as they were all tatty. To be honest with you anything here tends to be rough in comparison to UK models, and I have looked at plenty !!! All of the E230's had well over 110k miles, where-as it is easy to find sub 70k in the UK, with below 50k being sometimes available.
I may go to look at an E220 in Scotland that is probably good. If you think the stuff on usedcar.ie is good [it's not really] have a look at the one on this site and then look at the price. Much better value.
