The #1 injector seal was blowing on my 2008 E220 estate and the black death was starting to build up, so yesterday I pulled the injector out and replaced the seal. The car has done just over 221,000 miles and they are the original injectors.
The hole in the centre of the old copper seal was much bigger than the new one. I used the Laser Tools 6101 cleaning kit to clean out the injector well and polish the seat. When I tried to put the sealing plug into the injector hole it went right through into the combustion chamber. Is this something anyone has come across before? The plug stayed on the end of the insertion rod so I could pull it back out, but if I had unscrewed the rod the plug could easily have ended up loose in the cylinder, needing the head off to retrieve it.
Is this wear on the hole in the head for the injector or was the plug/lip just too small?
As it was, the carbon build up wasn't very bad and the injector went back in OK and seems to have sealed properly.
