Seems like the normal level of smoke from a diesel, just a bit more fire.

Wonder if it was a turbo failure/ diesel runaway

DPF regeneration gone wrong perhaps? Has been known to happen if a car has a bad oil leak.
I think Vauxhall insignia’s had an issue where a power steering pipe would crack and spray fluid straight into the DPF which could give similar results.

Arson?

If it occurred whilst driving why stop so close to other cars?

I had a problem with a diesel leak and I would get smoking during DPF region when the exhaust and engine in general getting very hot (thankfully fixed).

I was under the impression that diesel wouldn't ignite!

On my old Mondeo. Unknown blocked dpf, car started auto regen just as I pulled into work, excessive heat into cabin, carpets catch fire, fire brigade called, car a write off !

I thought I'd looked at the MB jealousy thread for a moment.

I thought only BMW and Volvo's fried in hell?
Seems like now MB joined the club. o_O

Have you seen other Mercedes go on fire like this one???

I've only seen torched MB on the news.
News are full of reports about cars in flame.
Some MB had spontaneous combustion while on the road been driven.
That's real dangerous!

Sir David Bowie had a great song.
Putting out the fire with gasoline.
Rest in peace Sir.
