I have a e220 w211 and there appears to be a slight oil weep on the rear differential pan cover, does the diff have to be completely removed from the car to get the cover off?

Does the deep appear to come from the top? If so check the breather on top of the housing.

It appears at the bottom in the middle between the pan cover, there's definitely no leaks from anywhere else as the diff is pretty clean

Just clean it off and dry it . Then see if you can tighten the bolts that are holding the back plate on to the axle casting ..
Mine was loose and pinched them all up this cured most of it . And some axle gaskets cannot be replaced in situ as the rear sub frame needs droping to remove back plate . Just clean oil off and check you oil level periodically . This way you will have no problems. But as post before said make sure its not the pinion bearing seal that is leaking .

I believe its sealant that's used, was yours a w211 as well?

No my friend i have the W124 260E with the M103 engine .I know the workshop manual said for the replacment of my gasket or seal its a sub frame down job just to clear the cover . Sorry to say merc made some things real bad for us owners .Dont know about yours worth checking ..After my model they might have see the error of their ways and made it easy for newer models

I'm just gonna keep an eye on it as it's only slightly weeping and not dripping on the floor, unfortunately looks like it's a diff out job, might do it if it gets worse but don't have the time at the moment, going to Germany at the end of the week in it

rich 20 mine is the same .But after 31 years and no one but me as ever cleaned it,,, it had signs oil leak on the cover bottom . I only noticed it when i went to change the gear oil . So i sprayed it with carb cleaner and wiped it all off . By the way if you go to change the final drive oil undo the filler plug first .Reason is it might be stuck solid and after draining off you will be unable to re fill it with oil. Have a good time in Germany .. ho and if your are going it will give you time to check the oil before you go,, dont want it to go down on you over there do you . You dont know how long its been leaking out might only be a egg cup full in there .
