E220D W213
Hi all,

I have recently purchased an E220d W213 2016 from London Watford Dealership, the car has FSH, 40k Mileage, and has a 1 year mercedes warranty.

The car has an issue which i noticed after i made the purchase, and it has been in and out of the mercedes service 3x times now with no success.

ISSUE: When cruising on the motorway above 60 miles per hour, I hear noises periodicly when accelerating in a certain motion, it goes away and comes again, and it seems like the faster i go the more the sounds increase. It sounds more like grinding/vibration/rattling sounds, as if something is dying underneath the car. When this happens, my steering wheel also vibrates slightly, but it more or less gives me a tingling sensation.

I don't hear the noises when city driving up to 30 miles per hour, it starts to slightly occur around 40 miles per hour plus, and it is definetly audible on the motorway. Mercedes gave it a balancing on all 4 wheels but no succes.

I guess the reason why i am unable to diagnose is because i am having hard times explaining the sort of sound i get. But after some intense research on the forums and what not, i think it may be related to the below:

Possible problem areas:
- Driveshaft and its assoicated units / components
- Torque converter
- Engine mount
- Gearbox mount
- Front and or rear flex discs
Propshaft
- Steering rack

Any ideas or suggestions guys?

Thanks

If it has Mercedes FSH?
Then, had it had any gearbox work? A fellow member has just had a problem on here where a Merc dealer mis-aligned the splines reassembling the prop shaft, which should be marked to show alignment for proper prop shaft balance

Would you say it's related to the drive shaft then? Do you reckon it's worth pointing it out to the Merc dealer to have a look at the shaft?

I mean, I get the vibration on the pedals too...

But what I don't get is, this sort of vibration I also heard on a 69 plate C and are class...wtf? Honestly I'm confused. But the noise coming from the 69 plate vehicles were much less than my car.

see here but an older car with more mileage

If there are reports of many new cars doing it, then I wouldn't imagine that dealers have had chance to work on new cars are make an error in reassembly

The exact issue, i've seen it on an C Class 2019 and E Class 2019.

But ofcourse, the vibration and noises i hear from my car is far more aggressive and louder as my car is 2016.

I am gonna go to an external Merc specialist to diagnose the issue, because it seems like Merc can't find it, or perhaphs does not want to find it.

I won't BS here...There are folk on here with more knowledge & expertise than me.

I also might be inclined to book in with a well regarded MB indy for a 2nd opinion & diagnostic.

Maybe also consider how supplying dealer or warranty management might respond to any later approach for work &/or costs on back of disclosure that diagnostic work done. I cant see it being an issue if nothing pulled apart , (but that is just my common sense expectation).

A decent experienced MB indy should be able to identify known common issues.

Yeah i am going to a MB indy for diagnostics. The fella also said he could take the car to a MB dealer with me and get it fixed at the dealer.

I think this is a great offer to be fair, ofcourse he will get paid for his service. However, it just seems to be the only way, to get the MB indy to come into the dealer and embarass them really...

I am impressed so far.... Good Luck & keep us updated as appropriate & able please :)

Hi Guys,

The MB indy said the juddering and noises are normal as i don't have the AMG Premium Plus, the standard suspensions with the ability to change the settings accordingly to the road condition. He did say, with wear and tear the car will get worse like this, i mean, i don't really appreciate that with Mercedes if thats the case.

Perhaphs the noises aren't really an issue, because i have driven A ,C , E and the GLC, all 69 plates ( 2019 model). But unfortunately, i have realized that all of these cars judder when driving. Not quite sure if anybody else has realized this, perhaphs it isn't an issue but rather the charecteristics of the vehicle, but whatever it is, i was not happy with it and have returned the car back.

In anycase, the dealer took liability and offered me my refund.

I am gutted to give away this beauty, however, i have no other choice as this issue was not getting fixed.

Have you checked the wheel bearings? I had an issue that seemed to become noticeable at speed. Took a while to get it diagnosed, as various mechanics either couldn't hear / feel it, or just didn't seem to believe me.

I didn't get the wheel bearings checked.
Rather, i took it to an MB indy, and he said this is normal with mercs. You could hear noises according to the asphalt condition of the road surface. I wouldn't want to believe this, however, i have testified it with other Merc loaners, 2019 E Class, 2019 A Class, 2019 C Class and 2019 GLE.

I believe what seems normal to other merc drivers is not normal to me.

I have given the vehicle back.

I’ve got a 220 estate on a 2017 plate with>120k on the clock.
I get no vibration at any speed and it‘s the smoothest car I’ve ever owned. The ride is 100 times better than my Audi S-line.
I would not have accepted your issue as “normal”. Maybe if it were a Fiat.
Understand you let the car go but it’s a shame for the next owner.

Sounds like a fob off rather than a diagnosis.

I've had my S213 (MY2017) for 2 weeks now and most of my driving so far has been on motorways M56, M6, M62 and M57 between Manchester and Liverpool. Previously and for 13 years, I had an S211 E320 CDI. Prior to that, I had an S210 E240 and an S124 E300-24v. I have found the S213 E220d everything that I hoped it would be - much quieter than the in-line 6 cylinder engine and with a silky smooth gearbox and firm but comfortable ride. I am a surprised to hear that your indie thinks that all Mercs judder and make strange noises as that certainly has not been my experience and having done a fair bit of research and read many reviews of the S213 before changing, I've not seen anything to suggest that it is normal or commonplace.

I think I may know what's causing the issue 🤣

What a load of crap you have been fed, its gone now but my E220 W213 2017 was the quietest most comfortable car I have ever driven, miles above my previous Audi A6's.
