E230 gearbox fault? Help please!!

Hi all, i am new to this forum, my name is guy, and i was hoping that one of you guy's may be able to shed some light on this problem.

The car is a 97 230e auto,
the problem is that the car dont seem to upshift, the car selects drive and reverse no problem, but when i put my foot down the car goes right up the rev range, but stays in 1st gear, is this what they call limp mode or not? As i thought limp mode would only let the car rev to 3000rpm?

Any help or advise would be great, thanks.

Which gearbox does it have, 4 or 5 speed.?

If it's a 4 speed suspect the governor drive gear has stripped. This is an easy repair job which just needs the governor out.

hi, it has 1234 drive so i guess 5 speed.

In that case it is likely to be either the selector or a speed sensor in the gearbox.
You need the codes read.

i have no eml light on, on the dash, so will it still show a fault code?

As DM says. It will have logged a code.
