I think its a Chain like most Mercs - I'm sure someone will confirm this though.
If its a chain it just gets changed when it becomes noisy normally 100k + Not much chance of just snappin like a belt though

chain? ahh..
I had a chain on my first car a pug 205 which didn't need a change at all.
Just couldn't find any reference to changing 'the belt' in the MB Service Booklet.
So maybe that's the answer.
