Hi, in the last week or so I've noticed fumes and a smell in the car, it's kind of exhaust/diesel.

I checked the exhaust last night no leaks.

Checked pollen filter was secure and sealed.

Checked the body to bonnet seal which should isolate the pollen filter area from the engine bay and that seems ok.

If I use the re-circulation button it is much better. But I need to drive with the window slightly open.

I am thinking its either a slight diesel leak, or injector seal leaking.
There are no over powering smells under the bonnet, no fuel on undertray.

Has anyone had anything similar and what was the cure.

Search function doesn't bring up much.
Google brings up a few answers, but not sure how relevant.

If you have done the injector seals what parts are needed and are they MB only ?

I will investigate further tomorrow but I like to go into battle armed !

Check out the foot of the injectors, if there is moisture or black stuff, they are leaking. Search 'black death' for this problem. MB parts, but very cheap.

Otherwise check splits in Turbo hoses, EGR valve connections.

Could be that Black Death issue with Merc Diesel engines

That describes the symptoms my c270 exhibited when it's injector seals let go.

I replaced the seals and the stretch bolts that hold the injectors in. I also used some MB special grease around the injectors. To my surprise, my local MB dealers had the seals in stock, but not the bolts or grease.

I think I was quite lucky, I caught it early, and all the injectors came out by hand.

If I had my time over again, I'd have used 1/4" drive tools rather than 3/8" for easier access.

Thanks for all your replies. Is it worth doing all 5 seals, I would imagine that wold make sense.
How long approx would this job take?
Do I just ask for lower injector seals and stretch bolts, nothing else needed?

Thanks again.

I did all 5, as 2 maybe 3 were leaking. It made sense to me.

So, 5 seals, 5 bolts, 1 small pot of "special grease". I think it came to about £35ish.

I guess I spent about 3 hours on it. You can chip off the worst of the black gack when it's cold, but the injectors came out with the engine hot, as the black gack is rather less viscous then. As I said, I think I had it easy, compared to some of the write-ups I read before doing the job.

Good luck.

Seals and bolts £14 from MB. Did all 5, only number 2 was leaking.
Changed the oil and filter, changed the thermostat and coolant.
Now just need some new tyres and to stop the brake squeak.

Thanks again for the heads up and advice.

It is very important that the seats for the injectors are re-cut. If this is not done they may leak again very quickly.

The flat part where the washer seats or the angled part ( like a valve seat ) right at the to?

Where the washer goes. The cutting tools are on eBay.
