E270CDI Economy

It'd be interesting to hear how this compares to something like a 240 or 320 petrol. Just so I can feel good. ;) Even my 230 komp will do 36mpg with a good run(70 + miles ) @75 mph`ish.

I did a 110 mile round trip yesterday mainly on the motorway with a short bit of town driving at either end. As I was in no rush, on the motorway the cruise was set to 70mph. I got 34 mpg over the day.

This did not make me feel good - I thought the 320 would be way down on that. That's actually very good for that size of engine & car.

Now more convinced something is wrong. I'll give it until 2k and then visit the dealership if things haven't improved.

Oh, but I only get 18-20 mpg during my daily 5 mile drive to and from work!

I test drove a 270 CDi when they first came out and averaged 40Mpg including seeing away a Peugeot 206 GTi from rest to very high speed. :D

I only get 40mpg on a long run at a constant speed.

Dieselman: 40mpg? What kind of driving did that involve, apart from your decadent (but irrresistable) boy racer antics?

I tend to find thing are fine on the flat/downhill, then uphill stretches really have a major major impact, even if I'm really gentle.

The drive was from the dealers through the City and suburbs then a 10 mile dual carriageway run and then back the opposite way. I did have the trip computer displaying instant mpg all the way. It definately went down plenty at 120+.

Some thing to remember is to not drive the vehicle too gently as this will cause the rings not to seat and to lose compression. Get the car warm and give it some pedal to the metal treatment especially up hills. Don't rev the engine high but do load the engine to 100% torque output.
This will burn off glaze from the bores and may release missing power, thus economy.
Also if you drive too steadily the car stays in a lower gear for longer so uses more fuel.
In adition you will be filling with winter diesel which gives lower mpg figures.

Don't forget a modrn diesel needs upto 10k miles before it gives it's best economy.

If theres no smoke it's probably not broke!

Words of comfort: thanks for the input Dieselman. Out of interest, when do the stations switch over and from winter diesel? I guess it's a heady kerosene cocktail?

Are you suggesting that by driving gently I may have done irreversable damage, or just prolonged the running in process? I've been trying to keep to 3,000rpm max (although that may have slipped on the odd occasion ;))

Also on the statement about smoke, is that a general rule with diesels? Does smoke suggest an over-rich mixture?

One last thing - why Dieselman? Are you a true diesel guru?
