I have a 2002 E270Cdi which has the worst sounding intrusive engien noise I have ever heard. Impossible to describe. Noise is most apparant when engine is put under load, i.e. when in a high gear and you open the throttle. This "rattle/chatter" gives the car a very rough and unpleasant tone. Performance seems not to be effected. I have driven 4 Merc diesels from the dealership as they contunie to try and find the fault and all are smooth, refined and quiet by comparison to mine. At crusing speeds or coasting teh car i v quiet, it's only when you accelerate. I am desperate to get any suggestions as MBUK have no idea and I know sooner or later I am just going to be stuck with what frankly sounds worse than a bus.

C270 CDI engine noise

I have a Sep 2001 C270 CDI and the engine is also very noisy when accelerating. Great performance but let down by ambient noise levels when cold, and when pushed. Have discussed the problem with local MB dealer who understands the comment, but has no idea how to solve the issue. Have written to MB UK and they say much the same, "will refer the issue to the design development group for future reference"! Great help they were! Also contacted Honest John in Telegraph, who again was unable to help. I suggested extra sound insulationj on bulkhead, but that is not possible apparently. I just have a CD on to help mask the noise. Not a great virtue for a MB!

I am not being funny, but by default diesels are quite noisy arent they? the C270 that I have been in always let you know it was a diesel. Smoothness and refinement is still the territory of petrol engines IMO.

C and E class diesels shouldn't be confused.

Unfortunately C class are noisy and rough, whereas Es are refined. the 270 is the most vocal engine.

It sounds like thre may be a problem with the engine mountings on your car. I'm not sure if your car uses hydraulic mounts but that could be the problem if it does.

Do the C270 and E 270 diesels have different engines or is this a noise/vibration insulation issue?

The MB website lists the power and torque output for the E220 and E270CDI as being higher than the same engines in the C class.

This is down to the inlet and exhaust manifolds being constrained by space on the C class.

ditto

I recently bought a 2001 MB 270cdi, and after a couple of weeks of ownership (i.e. tonight) it has developed the same problem - a loud 'woofy' noise on hard acceleration and a noticable rattle when ticking over.

After some investigation (poking around with the bonnet up and the engine running) the rattle seems to eminate from the plastic air inlet gubbins on the offside of the engine bay. I'm going to further investigate this in the morning when I can see what I'm doing properly.

I'll keep you posted
