E280 47.9mpg IMPOSSIBLE?

Nobody mentioned sticking brake pads.

Crud builds up and they do not slide freely when the brake pedal is released.

It only takes a small amount of constant rubbing against the disc to have an appreciable mpg affect.

Take all the pads out and give them a good clean, and coat the sliding edges with copper grease.

Then report back.

Good suggestion, but alternatively, go for a long drive without using the brakes, coast to a standstill, get out and feel the discs to see if one or more of them is hot. That way I get to check if anything is sticking without getting my fingers dirty.:D I'll try it on the A1 on Monday morning.

Get yourself an infra red thermometer...no chance of dirty nor burnt fingers then.

Is it Ok to use diesel additive with a Bluetec engine?

I can only answer this indirectly.

MB say that no fuel additives should be used if added by the drivers themselves. They are concerned both about the product itself and the ratio.

However MB say that there is no issue with using fuel that has additives added by the fuel supplier, because in this case they trust the supplier to use good quality additives and with the correct mixture ratio.

So the short answer is that you can use BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power which will already have the required additives, it will not cause any issues and will not affect the warranty (if your car is still under warranty).

As for adding the additives yourself... you will *probably* be OK but I can't really say for sure.

Shell VPower may help with mpg. I used to use Millers as an additive some time ago. Some members on other forums were even adding 2 stroke oil to their diesel! Braver than I!

Mb also said there gearboxes were sealed for life. Look where that got them

I use millers. Great stuff

To clarify, MB are not opposed to fuel additives as such, they are opposed to drivers adding these themselves.

It is not a straightforward task to evaluate the correct quantity required. There will inevitably be some level of error.

I used to add Redex to every tankful up to a few years ago - now I use Premium fuels, much easier (though it works our more expensive than using additives).

The results are in

Results as promised.

Based on a 506 mile round trip, mostly dual carriageway and including 6 short runs of a couple of miles from cold. Driving up to about 70 on the way out and up to about 80 on the way back with a good blat over Woodhead.

Brim-to-brim 41mpg. assuming the odometer is correct.

I'll pump the tyres up a bit more and post next week's results here.

Thanks for the input from everyone.

still , bit far from the 47.9 but not bad for all the comfort it provides , see if you can re-map it for fuel economy
