E300-24 Convertible with a E500 kit!!!!

Just stumbled upon this whilst browsing through the german ebay!

The car itself is a 300-24 but the guys done an E500 conversion from the original parts! Whats even more interesting, ITS A MANUAL!!!

Rear arches look as if they have definately been rolled.

Nik

A couple of the piccies don't look right to me. Almost taken from a brochure. OK, it's 0045 and I am on my second bottle of Aussie red!!

The 500e rear arches dont look right on a coupe or cabrio. I think the lines are lost on such a big panel, the saloon has the benefit of the door line to match the flares. Bits G has done a similar thing on his e36 coupe and it looks much better.

If that guy is running a 3 litre engine on a manual transmission, then do you think the transmission is strong enough to handle the torque and power/kickdown of that engine?

Surely this must be the same manual transmission that was put in the E200 and E220 models?

It is the same basic 717.4 box used in the 124 and the 210 Cars like the 208 use the 716.2 box

The interior looks mint:

Perhaps you could help me on this one then, im thinking of changing my 2.2 litre for a 3 litre.

Heres why, given the size of the w124 and the weight of it, the 2.2 just barely manages to provide any excitement whilst driving (mines a manual). Also on 5th gear (which is supposed to be the economical gear), its really rather sluggish on pick up so it drinks more fuel for it to do its job! (this is where I see the petrol gauge drop down a bit).

If it was a 3 litre, would the engine have more torque and power over the cars weight/size ratio so therefore result in less fuel being consumed since it doesnt have to struggle? (could say more economical?)

Plus would the diff ratios on the transmission need to be changed to compensate for the difference of power/torque from a 2.2 to a 3 litre?

Sorry if im talking a load of rubbish here, just trying to learn and make sense of it all :)

why dont you go for a 320 as yours being a facelift will suit the 320 better... 300 is the pre facelift engine...

Jay, yes your right...320 would be better.

What parts in the mechanics side would also need to be changed or updated if I was to go ahead with this? As surely it can't be as simple as just swapping the 2 engines over.

no its not...

others could comment on this better as ive never changed but just off the top of my head:

- Engine
- Engine Mounts
- Wiring Loom
- ECU
- Brakes
- Radiator
- Lots of Anclillary Parts

These things are always better done with a donor car.. may be an idea to keep a look out on ebay for a damaged or rusty one that may go cheap and then swap everything over..

That was my first thought the seats do not look as they have been sat in

Great minds, and all that, eh?

There's a slight concession to the driver's seat having been sat in - you can just about make out a couple of creases at the front of the drivers seat - but remarkable all the same.

The Nappa leather used was very hard, I had it in my 129,, in spite of that you do not slide around much on it

with that photo you cannot see the areas that would normally show wear...i.e the bolsters..

EDIT - just saw the other photos and i agree does look mint!

It is a LHD car and the drivers seat is shown,, but is not that too clean to be real

You'd need a complete E320, and given quite the amount of work needed, why not just sell your car and buy an E320?

To be honest, I think there must have been some degree of Photoshop used in this. Those floor matts seems to have this "brush" effect used on them and same with the seats to give it that uncreased "never sat in" look.

Then reduce the picture quality slightly in a JPG format, hides the edited parts very well :)

Then again, could be real! lol

Nick, I would love to exchange mine for a real E320 but its really hard to find a decent well looked after one in a saloon as im not really a fan of the coupe version.

I have been on the look out, came across that M-reg E320 on Pistonheads which had the twin turbo conversion done to it. I think that engine has suffered a hard life if a head gasket had to be replaced! Not to mention, as soon as I mention the car has a twin turbo on it to the insurance company...all I'll get is a "On yer bike sunshine!" haha.

The m104 engine suffers from head gasket failure. Its quite common. Oh and if you really want a saloon with soem power, I might be selling my E36. :D
