Have already posted this in the classified -wanted section and been advised to also post in the engine section.

The timing chain on my E300 diesel went (1993 S124). Looking for a replacement engine - the dealership are prepared to let me have one for £5600 (not sure if that includes the VAT).

Been to the MSL in Birmingham with no joy. Does anyone have an engine for sale - but not for £5600

. If not is there anyone else in Birmingham/West Midlands I can approach.

Failing above is there any advice/things to look out for when buying the engine - most of them are not attached to a car so how does one assess how many miles it has done, condition and even if it will run. Also how much are they (range-wise).

Finally I may be clutching at straws but does the diesel Sprinter vans have the same engine (I keep looking at the driver side wing) or does the "606" engine appear in another model?

Many thanks for reading this any/all help would be much appreciated and apologies for and mistakes in etiquette in posting.

Regarding your Sprinter question there is no equivalent engine. The first big diesel in a Sprinter was the 120hp 5 cylinder 2.7.

Have you checked Ebay? There are even cars available at very low prices. Just make sure you do not go OTT with costs :)

Good luck
John

Big old Merc diesels are fairly bullet proof, Sprinters with 605 2.9 engines often have 500k up them....

There aren't all that many 124 multivalves about so it might be a while before one appears at a breakers, is your old engine definatly unrepairable?

need an angine

i have got a merc e300 diesel 1995 multivalve that has done 133000 miles the engine was perfect before some little tit ran into the back the insurance company wrote it off i have used some parts off the engine like the alternator etc you could make me an offer for the full car if you like

£5600? That's really bad news.

I only paid £2500 for mine, with only 106,000 miles and full MB service history, and it came with a free 1995 car ...

It still has only 112,000 miles and I am willing to sell it for the same price, with the car.

No, I'm not joking.

Engine rebuild not possible?? whats the mileage and condition of the rest of the car. Are the pistons/rods /cylinders OK? If its only the valve gear then maybe just some timing gear/ valve replacement a possibility by a reputable engine specialist. Cost probably under £1000 depending on the bits required.

Is this a W210? If so, is the interior light gray? If it is, could I have the lid from the compartment under your elbow? The clip on mine is broken.

Many thanks

Many thanks everyone for your advice. From the forum both open and from pms the advice seems to be re-build as will know history of the engine, get a good job done and the the cost will be approx £1000. This seems to be at odds with the advice from people in Birmingham which runs along theline of get a new engine, slap it in and be done with it and no worries of bits of metal finding their way around the engine after a re-build causing the engine to fail three months down the line.

No the car is not fantastic but reasonable and certainly not in the same class as those offered by Nick - no air-con, other toys and cloth interior.

And no all the advice given so far in Birmingham has been without the benefit of anyone looking at the car let alone taking the head of to check pistons, rods etc.

Reason I asked if anyone knew how to assess a free-standing engine is because I saw this

All ideas welcome and thanks again

Yep.

Connect fuel and a battery and fire it up. If it starts well without much smoke it should be Ok.

You can always perform a compression test but cold starts are the killer test for diesels. It's no problem running them out of the car for a bit, ran a 6.7 litre combine 'arvester engine on the ground as a test once. Nice..:) :D

Odd that the Birmingham guys say go for a new engine, yours shouldn't have stray bits of metal, just bent valves and maybe guides and chain plus guides.

That looks like a 603 (pre multivalve engine) which if it is is the wrong one.

Re buying them off the floor, other than looking at the oil there's not much to see and you'll just have to fit the engine on trust.

The 124 and 210 versions are quite different animals, a 210 won't easily fit into a 124...

What, the 24 valve units?

Seemed an Ok transplant for the Finnish superturbo guys.. They are both 136 Bhp 606 engines iirc.

The LHD ones are all turboed(?), RHD 124s don't have a turbo (steering box gets in the way)

And do the 124's have an electronic pump like the 210s?

But the poster just wants a basic long engine, so they are the same if he uses a rhd n/a 606.

Pumps went fully electronic in 1997, but the o/p has the one off his engine if it's not right.

But don't the turbo blocks have different pistons and the oil feed for the turbo on the side?

Not sure about the pistons, though the compression ratio was the same, although turbos do have oil cooling jets for the underside of the pistons. The oil feed isn't an issue.

What I'm suggesting is to buy a w210 n/a 606 which ran until 1997. Forget the turbo.

Seems like a lot of hassle given what would need to be swapped over, when OP could just get hold of a 124 engine.

What is the hassle. Buy a n/a (normally aspirated) 606 from a W210 or W124. They are the same engine. The only thing that MAY need swapping is the IP.

The sumps different, all the manifolds are different, the front timing cover different...........

I don't doubt that it all could be swapped over, but it would take more time than repairing the current engine.
