E300 TD W210 GEARBOX 1997

does this gearbox oil need changing or topping up periodically or is it sealed for life.

Thanks in advance

Even if it is the so called 'sealed for life' (722.6) 'box, i would strongly suggest you get the oil and filter changed, i did on mine and the state of the old oil and filter after 90k was 'not good'.

It should be a 722.6 five speed box on this car.

There is no such thing as sealed for life. There is what MB call filled for life, unfortunately it will be a short one if you don't change the ATF.

Change the ATF at 60k approx for a long lifed box.

We change ours every 80K and so far (220K & going strong) no problems at all, smooth as the day it was built

Is changing the ATF (auto transmission fludid I presume) a specialist job. How can I check the gearbox level etc

Thanks for your help so far

I'ts been covered here loads of times. Perform a Search of the Engine forum and you'll find it.

Is a DIY job but you need a dipstick from the dealer.

It's a fairly straightforward job for a competent mechanic, just make sure whoever does the job uses MB fluid and filter and, as Dieselman said, has access to the special dipstick.

Thanks Guys.

The reason I am concerned about this box is that it has just started to "kick" ocassionally when changing down gears. Usually occurs after high speed motorway driving when slowing down to approach slower traffic on side roads etc. This probably happens at the moment about once or twice a week. I was wondering is this might be the first sign of problems ahead.
