w210 e300 diesel
the merc has developed yet another problem now! apart from the car falling to bits due to rust and rot:wallbash:

i had the car on axle stands earlier today so i could remove the alternator to get it checked due to the car dying over a period of a month ie,i have to keep on charging the battery up. well it turns out the alternator is working fine as it should. so why is my battery always needing to be charged up? this is the 2nd bosch silver battery ive bought:wallbash: i also notice that the car is very lazy at firing up! almost like the starter is giving up?:dk:

my next problem has ocurred after i lowered the car down after doing the above!... everytime the car goes to change a gear(note auto transmission here) it jolts aggresively:dk: and not smoothly as you would expect.

any ideas?

re battery charge - is the battery old? If not then you have a current drain somewhere - most likely culprit is the alarm or the radio. How quickly does the battery lose its charge?

re the harsh gear change you have dislodged a vacuum pipe. Find it reconnect it and all will be fine.

no the battery is not old at all.
i think you may have something there when you mention the alarm! i now remember about 2yrs ago the alarm started playing up, the siren would keep going off! im pretty sure i stopped it by inserting a key into the side of the siren housing i think.? could it be the alarm that is drawing the current?

regarding the harsh gear changes.. vacuum pipes? i dont think ive been near any vac pipes! all ive done is remove and replace the alternator!
i will have a look for any loose vac pipes though.

in the meantime, any info on the alarm fitted to the e300d would be good, thanks.

How olds the car?

Didnt realise the 5 speed used any vac pipes on the trans.

ypu may be right - I was thinking about my old w124; the symptoms sounded too much like that though - easy to dislodge a vacuum pipe by accident when doing something else.

re the alarm can you disconnect it and see if it solves the problem?

is it only when it is cold that it is lazy to start or all the time?

well something is obviously draining the battery! as 2 day ago i full charged the battery and this morning the car was dead! there was only enough power to open the car and the dash lights are very dull.

re: the alarm, how do i disconnect it? is there a fuse that i can take out to stop it from working? or is there more to it than this?

re: the gearbox. any other idea on why the gear changes are aggressive after i jacked up the drivers side of the car to gain access to the alternator? i literally raised the drivers side - took the alternator off - reffited the altenator after getting it checked - and lowered the car.

re the alarm - it must be fused just not sure it is in the main fuse box as may be UK specific or fitted by the dealer? Have you checked your owners handbook. You could either have the battery itself checked or you could charge the battery leave it disconnected for 2 days then connect it - if it works you know for sure that you have a current drain. YOu need to get someone with an ammeter to check which circuit is drawing the current - once you have proved the battery itself is not the culprit.
re the auto box sorry no other ideas - but it is too much of a coincidence for it to happen after you removed and refitted the alternator - it has to be something that you did down there - have you taken the cover off again and had a good look around for a disconnected pipe or wire?
