E300D Estate (S124) Renovation

    And so it begins....

    I have had the S124 for just over 3 years now. I purchased it from a well known Mercedes Specialist dealer, and at the time of purchase, it was in excellent condition.

    3 years of family use and 50k later it requires a bit of TLC to bring it back to best.

    This will require lots of replacement parts, a fair bit of paint and plenty of time.

    I Needed some parts - Enter the E200TE donor vehicle in the exact same colour. Main reason for purchase of the car is it had 4 brand new tyres (destined for the 107 SL incidently) and there are plenty of bits to swap over. This vehicle had a rear shunt fairly recently and therefore comes with a brand new tailgate. Also many other parts a lot better condition of that on my E300TD. The rest of the parts required will be bought new. A lot of parts I did need are worse or the same on the donor vehicle unfortunately.

    The sideskirts have been removed from both vehicles. The E200TE jacking points are pretty good. The bad news is that the complete opposite is true for the E300! 2 I have managed to create a hole in. Oh dear.

    The sideskirts from the E200 will be going on the E300 as there are two large scratches that have been touched up on the originals since I got the car and the trolly jack slipped once causing a crack too. The skirts have cleaned up as new. Here they are degreased, awaiting a final wet sand prior to polish:

    One of the two mounts of the passenger wing mirror springy action had also broken due to me walking into the mirror a while ago.... so I have dismantled both mirrors and made one mint one from the two:

    The donor tailgate is half way stripped, the steering column multifunction stalk is also brand new in the car (less than a year old) so I will be replacing my shiny worn one with it.

    Next main job will be repairing the jacking points. I'm unsure whether, once fixed to paint the body colour of the car and then fit the plastic skirts over, or look to the future and heavy waxoil the area in black underseal....

    The most important things on an E300 Diesel are:

    * engine mounts
    * front prop doughnut
    * valve seat condition
    * balljoints
    * front shock absorber top mounts
    * rear subframe leading bushes
    * front wishbones

    The mechanicals are pretty good - i've kept ontop of everything on that score, its mainly the cosmetic bodywork that is letting the car down at the moment. Apart from the wings (which are pretty far gone now) the rest of the bodywork is really fine, with just minor marks or scratches here and there. i'd like to get it as good as I can without going the full respray route. An example of this is that my current tailgate is fine apart from 2 minor rust bubbles (3mm in size) at the bottom of the rear window. i could live with it but the donor car provides a cheap replacement. I'll be removing all the cladding and bumpers simply to clean it all behind there and start from scratch again knowing its all nice and clean and rust free (hopefully!)

    mechanicals; i have new rear subframe mounts ready to go on, along with a new exhaust. its already had new balljoints. Engine wiring loom needs replacing or repairing, Engine mounts are also on my todo list here as i think they are past their best. Ideally i'd replace the front springs with those of the donor cars (look brand new), but (a) i believe 124 springs are a nightmare to change without the right tool and (b) i'm not sure if a 300D has different springs to a E200??

    surely the springs will be diffrent, your car will seat lower on 200te springs. also ordering springs you need to add points for extras that your car has. I bought mine springs from GSF, Lesjofors brand but they got MB part no on them. about £30-40 front each. if you PM your chasis no i'll be able to work out which springs yuo need.

    Why has it deteriorated so much in 3 years? Shoddily prepared, or have you just been particularly hard on the car?
    I thought the idea of paying (in my eyes) mad money to a specialist dealer like CI wasto prevent the need for restoration of a big nature?

    3 years with two heavy winters (lots of salt and potholes) would have some effects, especially on a pristine car. W124s are robust, but if you use them hard they need TLC.

    Mine is being used a lot and invariably it picks up dings and you notice things like seals starting to deteriorate and keeping a 16 year old car in perfect condition is really like the Forth Road bridge, especially if you use it.

    Don't underestimate the weight of the tailgate. I changed one on mine years ago (before I bought a decent Merc :D) and they are HEAVY!

    I wouldnt save I've neglected the car - its just it lives outside all the time and is used daily and 2 young kids in and out etc.

    After taking off the cladding and skirts i think there are several "bodges" done in the past as mastic has been used instead of the correct clips etc in places. Plus the jacking points are corroded. I have to admit they have always looked a bit crusty since I got it but I guess 3 years has took its toll.

    I think some classic car dealers spend a lot on making a car look good, not so much on actually making it good.
    Like silversaloon, I've also bought 2 more cars to use either for parts or put back on the road, or both. One was meant to be really good, the other has a head gasket fault so just a parts car.
    The really good one is rather shabby, the other one is really nice.

    A dealer would clean them up, do a bit of paint and charge literally ten times the price but still only give 3 months warranty.

    On the other hand by a car from jonnyboy:thumb: Run it for 16 months do around 20K in it, towing all sorts of trailers and it still sits up and begs for more. Its second MoT in my ownership is due at the end of this month. Probably rear sub frame bushes to change and then another 12 months of trouble free abuse.

    Should the back box be black or silver on a 124 estate?

    Mine is currently black and I think it looks much nicer than silver (as the car is a dark colour too) as its quite visible at the rear of the car.

    I am thinking of spraying the new backbox black with some high temp paint. What do you reckon?

    are they black when new from MB? my new backbox is non genuine unfortunatly so I'd need to spray it. my thinking is it will help with rust prevention a bit with a lick of paint all over it too, especially at the welded joints....

    been out in the donor car for past few hours trying to get the steering wheel off. the thing just wont budge. its the 1st steering wheel i've taken off that i'm close to admitting defeat with. a real shame as the indicator stalk is brand new so i'd love to swap it over.

    i'll try a 10mm allan socket instead - so far i've been using an allen key with a breaker bar on it. i may resort to angle grinding it off and then buying a new bolt to refit the wheel again afterwards, but this would be a hassle due to access.

    would a air wrench make easy work of the bolt?

    Hi

    I went through the same when i bought a genuine box from MB, it is silver and looked crap when all new and shiny but once it got murky i have learnt to live with it.

    Interesting too that MB put brushed paint on the welded joints too. See pics below......

    That's so it doesn't rust before you buy it, it will still rust in use as they use regular steel welds.

    I've painted it matt black using some high temp spray paint. Looks a lot nicer.

    I'll be doing the same with the new centre box too, probably stick with silver for that though.
