My E300d W210 1996 non turbo with no MAF has recently become reluctant to rev above 3000rpm.
Performance up to 3000rpm seems to be normal, I also noticed slight flaring on the lower gear changes. Any suggestions?

doesnt this mean its in limp home mode?

If the box is shifting differently to normal - flaring when it doesn't normally - I'd suspect a vacuum leak

That would be the wrong way round, a vacuum leak should give a hard shift.

For the O/P's question it does sound like it's in limphome mode or a general lack of power, suspect either fuel starvation and/or air leak, but have the codes read.

i'd start with the fuel filters - pre-filter, main filter and the in-tank fuel strainer. Change the main filter and either change or clean the other two.

Make sure none of them are clogged that would struggle at high revs, although i think its probably something else, but worth checking 1st anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I have been running successfully on filtered veg oil since July last year and had no probs. I have replaced the fuel filters in the engine bay but not the tank filter. Does the tank need to be drained to do this?

Thanks

Karl

You didn't say you were running veg oil.
What's happening is the filters are clogging now the temperature has reduced.

Possibly the tank filter needs cleaning, which is awkward as it's accessed from under the car and the tank may well need cleaning out as well.

Change the main filter and clean the pre-filter, then remove the engine cooling fan to assist with warming the main filter.

But if the shift is abnormal then vacuum should be involved

Vacuum doesn't affect running on these engines, the pump control is electronic.

I thought the box on the early W210s non-turbo diesels had vacuum-control to flare shifts

I am no W210 expert. But the 722.428 box from a W210 fits a W124 (722.435). I believe the only difference is that the speedo drive is electronic on the W210 and mechanical on the W124 but the drive just bolts on and can be swopped over

It does use vacuum but if the vacuum leaked it would cause a hard shift and the vacuum isn't used for engine control, it's electonic control, likewise the gearbox vacuum is electronically controlled too.
